I bought some roses from the J&P red tag sale and the Edmunds' half-price sale. The J&P roses arrived today, four bare-root roses in a box with a little piece of plastic covering them. Nothing else. They are dry, dry, dry as a bone and loaded with black canes. They're not the worst roses I've ever received. I once got a shipment from Hortico in which 7 of the 9 roses were stone dead, without a single living cane or root, and I paid full price for those. The ones from J&P have at least 2 living canes each, so it could be worse.

I'll let you know the state of the roses from Edmunds' when I get them.

From J&P I ordered Nancy Reagan, Sweetness, and two Shazams (one for me and one for Sue). The roses from Edmunds' will be (I hope) Koko Loco and Glenda Marie.

Well, if it's any consolation, my Royal Amethyst I got from Edmunds was DOA.. never did anything, no leaves, no nothing. Koko Loco has leaves, but hasn't really taken off yet. I can get Sweetness locally if you need me to. Love that Shazam!!! Wow! Smiling And that Glenda Marie.. holy guacamole, I really really REALLY love that one! Damn!!

The box from Edmunds' Roses arrived today. They aren't fabulous, but they're a lot better looking than the J&P roses I received yesterday.

The best rose of all, though, came from Toni today. It's a 5-gallon Orchid Masterpiece that Toni removed from the container and sent without the soil. She packed it so well that only the tops of the canes look slightly wilted, and I would have cut them off before planting anyway.

you be embarrassing me!!

I just packed them on the best way I could figure out on how to pack a big ol' rose w/o it costing a ton of $$. And I didn't want to cut those as I know that would put even more stress on the poor rose plus I wanted to show what the bloom looked like.

I was tempted by the Edmunds sale, but I refrained. I was interested in a couple of the new roses by Radler. I may be able to find them in person or from another source.

If I got grafted roses with dead canes, I would take pictures and call for replacements. It is their own fault for sending them in bad condition sale or not.

Any replacements I'd get this late in the season could look even worse, Andi. I imagine they sent me the best they had left in stock.

You could call them anyway. You never know. If they send you a replacement, between the two you may get a rose's worth of canes.
