The sun came out so everything of course is put on hold so I can run out and check on my semps...what else is so important Posting to show how pretty, don't have a hope of identifying any of these because they have looked so different for the 9 months that I've had them


Then this one, which has such wonderful cilia...sure can't wait until it has some chicks!!


This one is going to be really large!


And finally this one, which is currently very grayish/green but goes through stages of being olive and now this purplish, its been a very profuse hen! (lots of chicks) I've thought maybe its 'Silverine' but that's just a wild guess

The first photo looks like it has some very mushy, rotting lower leaves. It might be a good idea to gently remove them and tuck gravel under the healthy leaves.

Love the one with cilia and such wonderful tufting on the end of the leaves.
And just look at those cute little offsets waiting for spring, in the last photo. How sweet.

Lynn, the plant in the top photo had died, I thought (except for the offshoots) then recently I noticed there's life in the middle So I will take your advice and clear away some of the dead leaves, I just didn't want to mess with it since it seems to be in the process of some sort of rejuvenation

It shouldn't harm it to gently pull out the mushy leaves. I have to do that occasionally, for the same reason yours is doing that. RAIN, and lots of it.

Lynn, can you safely just pull off the leaves or would you take the plant up to do it? I have been staring at a number of soggy little semps lately wondering what I should do.

I only take them up from the soil if the entire rosette is looking to be in trouble.

He sure does.

I only had the "semp problem" very mildly until I got on here with you all!!!
A nearby yard has some really nice specimens, I saw the little rosettes, and I said "pretty!"...but then I saw the blooms and I said "man, that looks like succulent blooms what are those??" These were really big and fat and a slight scent!
Then I looked at a nursery and bought my first little webby one, (didn't keep a label, because it was just going to be one or two)
Its not like I'm trying to 'keep up', its that they're so many cute ones!! And the little bit of resistance I may have goes out the window when I have you all saying - "ah go ahead get 'em!!"
And then I go onto SMG or Young's and they have other totally cute ones!
(while taking photos yesterday, I suddenly thought "ooh, these are looking so healthy (considering its winter) just wait till spring how many babies!!!!!" then I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to tell which ones and how many they'll produce and on and on There are several new tenants in my building and now I'm hogging all the garden space - ooops! I hope none of them are into gardening! (I have to get more mini green walls made as soon as spring is here so I can return one of the beds)
I didn't pull any leaves yet, because they're only dry, they're not mushy at all, its the oddest thing. The one looks fully dead, behind the main clump, which is how this one looked just a few weeks ago, I thought I'd lost both of them, but then this one is changing color, I'm wondering if the hen just changes into an odd brown color which looks dead?? (just so you don't think I'm crazy, I have pulled off many of the soggy dead leaves from other plants) Its a very curious and happy thing!

Sherri, come spring I want to see your garden!! I can't imagine so many semps in pots, sounds really beautiful! I'll pay my price of entry (a couple of babies of variety you don't have)

Cheers all, it has been so much fun getting to know you all and building my semp knowledge and actually keeping the labels, and recognizing which country hybridizers are from (since so many of the semps that I "absolutely must have or I'll just die!" are from Europe or are a species from Turkey or Aremenia (like that's going to happen)

Hey Sherri, mine is ok...its surviving this wind and rain (seems to be better off than some of the semps in the beds) The sedum in it are doing great, amazing little plants (rooting in the air where the soil has shifted!!) The semps I'm crossing fingers, they're so young I have to wait until they grow more - waiting patiently!

I do have to agree Greg, that we feed off each others' semp addictions! It doesn't matter how many you have, you'll always want more. As we learn about how each one produces chicks, or handles wet weather, or ?, those are great comments to add to the database entries for future reference. Leaves turning brown from being dry aren't quite as serious as those that are mushy. The mushy ones are from rot and that'll kill a plant faster. They are pretty forgiving plants for the most part. Your experience shows that. Crisp or mushy leaves aren't normal for a healthy semp though.

I think there was an implied question as to whether the odd-ball semp was the same or a different variety than the r-mahogany above. It is quite common to see no-id seedlings emerge in a pot or colony when the pot or colony is older. One will not notice a new seedling for whatever reason until it gets large enough to stand out. Thus it is likely that the odd one in the pot above is not a rubellum mahogany, but a stranger taking advantage of the opportunity to grow in a new home. To preserve the named variety, the odd ones should be moved to another home, imho, or weeded out.

Pia, did you mean sempervivum in your above post?
