Beautiful photos of your Veriegata Alocasia. I have one that struggles indoors in winter. How do you care for yours in winter? I keep mine in an unheated basement with temps around 50/55 F and water only when really dry. It started as a large plant but almost completely died the first winter. It did come back but not strong growth and for now it is doing ok but not thriving. It is so beautiful I would hate to lose it. Thanks, Larry

Hi TNDirtdigger, Welcome to the site!

I think the issue with your Variegated Upright Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata') may be due to the basement location with cool temperatures and low light ... with those conditions, it's likely going dormant.

edited to provide the correct database link. 😊

I do not think this is A. odora variegata, it is almost certainly A. macrorhizza variegata. But, it doesn't matter, the conditions for both are virtually the same. ALocasia will not stay 'up' in the conditions you are describing that you keep yours in. They will go dormant from #1 lack of light and #2 cold temps. And if you are lucky, and do not water, the rhizome will not rot. If you have to store it in those conditions in winter, it will probably never attain the status that it had before it declined. It would be much better if you could try and keep in in a warm place, and maybe in a window? Where it gets some light? Even if it goes dormant in those conditions, it would be better than in a cold basement. ALocasias do not like cold temps. Below 60 for a prolonged period sets them up for dormancy and loss of the mother tuber. Then you have to be satisfied with offsets.

So all 11 images in that entry should be moved @Gina1960 to Variegated Upright Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata') ?

yes
Odora is a much different leaf morphology than macrorhizza. Much more round, thicker leaf.
