Aw...not nasty sickies! No! Sad
Ha! I can't even think about planting anything until I lay my hands on a few bags of potting soil.....which will all be frozen solid. Hilarious!

I already have some stuff out there. Few more to go out at the end of the week. Mostly delphiniums and some dwarf pink monarda. Annuals will go out much later. Can't fit anything else under lights or anywhere indoors.

I am wondering about the cordyline as a WS?
I had thought it was a tropical? I have seeds, but thought it would need an indoor start?
Have you done them before? as WS?

Put your glasses on Carolyn Hilarious! I said CORYDALIS. It's corydalis sempervirens.
http://summerhillseeds.com/cor...

Directions on packet say ... sow on surface...68° F....bright light...Germinates in 4 to 8 weeks. Can be wintersown in a cold frame for spring germination.

I tried WSing corydalis lutea last year and didn't even have one sprout. The seeds have a short viability. I've never even seen one. I just want to try one. It doesn't like heat or humidity so really isn't suited to my climate. I bought some corydalis lutea last year online. They arrived nice and healthy. This was in June
Thumb of 2013-01-29/kqcrna/44120e

When the 100° hit in July, they seemed to melt before my eyes
Thumb of 2013-01-29/kqcrna/8b4410

I don't think they even lived long enough to set seed. At least I couldn't find any. But I'm a slow learner. Hilarious!

I wintersowed Corydalis nobilis last year. I was surprised that the summer heat didn't phase it. By the end of the season it was full-sized, and a beautiful addition to my hosta gardens.

This picture was early in the season, right after transplanting, around the first week of May.

I hope to wintersow my first few containers today. We're having a winter thunderstorm right now, so I'm glad I brought my planting materials in ahead of time!

I am a newbie to winter sowing. I should have started small, but I just can't help myself when it comes to seeds!

I already have 68 jugs sown. I will do another 30 plus this weekend. And I still have 50 other things I will do late march and late April (yes I know not technically winter sowing).

I just can't deal with a light set up so wintersowing seemed like a good choice for me. Can't wait to see what works!

We went from bitter cold to a crazy warm up. Lots of rain yesterday, TONS of rain today, and TONS of rain predicted for tomorrow. Then back to freezing! I have several areas flooded, I expect I will lose several perennials that don't like to sit in cold water or be encased in ice. So maybe lots of WSing for me is a good thing.

I'm going to throw this out but, I think that Corydalist goes dormant in the summer heat then grows again in the spring. I could be wrong!

I'm going to plant my jugs 1 of Feb.
Planting:
Scabiosa 'summer sundae'
Redbeckia 'Kelvedon Star'
Heliopsis 'Sunburst
Penstemon 'True Blue" Planted this 2 years ago, blooms everything but blue. Grumbling
Didiscus old sees will see what happensSweet William 'Sooty'
Phlox 'Peppermint Candy

Welcome, Jennifer. That's an ambitious first year! You'd better line up helpers for the planting season. Smiling I hope you have terrific results.

Springcolor, thanks. I've heard they can do that. But I thought mine really looked like a sudden death. They weren't very well established, they'd only been planted a few weeks. And one of the three I had disappeared overnight, dug up by a critter apparently. I couldn't find any trace, only a little hole in the ground. After a few days I found it some distance away laying on the lawn. One shoot had some life in it so I stuck it in the ground. It didn't seem to grow, or die, it just sat there. Maybe that one will survive? Probably not but maybe.

Gardening is always a gamble.

Welcome! , Jennifer. Wishing you the best of luck!

I ended up with just an hour to w/s today, but I did get 7 jugs done. Not particularly varieties that need cold, just the nearest group to grab. Big Grin Hopefully they'll do fine. I didn't see them on the list. This group I did with Jonna's vermiculite plan. I loved the ease of cleanup! Hurray!

Thank you everyone!

As for help, DH will help me make some new big beds. I have two prepped from end of last year. But as for the planting, nope its just me! But I really do enjoy it. My neighbors think I am totally NUTS!

I also plan on sharing. Lots of coworkers donated to my jug drive. They hopefully will have lots to pick from.

I actually came home and counted the seed packs and it seems besides the 25 I will do between Thurs and Sat I actually have 82 other packs! Going to go thru and pick out what I can direct sow! Even that is too much for me Smiling

Hi, Jennifer. The fact that you'll have nice new beds ready will make planting a cinch. To me, the most difficult part is the individual digging for each plant in my clay soil. This has been alleviated lately because the town has supplied us with enough top soil to amend and put very deeply over the clay soil.
