A few holes on the bottom and a few vent holes on the top even though the cap is off.

Thanks Karen. Do you need vent holes on the top? Didn't read that before?

You do need vent holes at the top. This article was very helpful to me.

Yes, they need excellent drainage like any other container would. (think of all the rain and snow they'll be exposed to). I use no screw on cap on the jugs, and usually cut an extra vent or two in the top. You might not need extra vents in top if you live in a northern place with cool springs, or keep jugs in shade. But if they're in sun, heat can build up fast in warm weather, so I like to pre-cut a vent or two.

Best way to avoid overheating, don't keep them in full hot afternoon sun, and flip open after germination when temps are warm. When weather gets hot, just chop off the lid.

Besides Critter's article, Lynn did one too, which is a "sticky" on the seeds forum.

Good article, Karen. Suggestion to use the container tops after the plants are in the ground is a new and useful fact. She puts hers in full sun and they do well!

What sun? The sun never shines in the PNW, does it? Hilarious! Really, sometimes it's just wise to adapt to your weather each year. In a cold spring, full sun might work great. In a particularly hot year, dappled shade, or only morning sun might be better. Everybody has their challenges and they tend to change yearly.

Sun!! Confused What sun. Mabe one or 2 days in January. I'll cut a few vents. I have holes drilled for drainage but thought the open top and places were it is not taped would vent them.

What kind of tape are you guys using? I haven't found anything so far that will stick to those jugs! Confused I've ended up using the bottom of the clear square bakery containers that DH's sweet fixes come in for tops.

For standard (open style) winter sowing jugs I use maybe an inch worth of duct tape in two or three places...just enough to hold the lid down.

For (closed) container experiments, I'm trying the clear packing tape as well.

If the jugs are at room temperature, I'd think either would probably do just fine. When taping cold surfaces, I like duct tape best. It's gooier. Smiling

I use the clear packing tape. Wrap it around many times and make sure the surface of the jug is very dry.

one or 2 small strips of duct tape vertically. Holds so well I have to cut them open in spring. You can see where the duct tape is still in place, and the plants were already blooming!

Woofie, make sure the jug surface is dry before applying.

I think I have more of a problem with cold than dry. Stuff doesn't stick worth a darn if it's cold.
Has anyone tried using those clear Sweet Tea jugs for WS? DH has gotten addicted to that stuff so I have accumulated a bunch of them.

Do you prep them and sow outside??? I sow mine in my basement.

We have bitter cold winters, no problem for duct tape.

Here's a picture of one. I've been using them for watering, but I have way more than I need. Sigh, I gotta get some potting soil soon. Things are starting to melt down to the point where I might be able to find a relatively flat spot for the stuff I want to WS this year. Should keep me out of mischief till it's time to start stuff in the GH. Angel
