Humm, I didn't know there were wild black raspberries. I did try the domestic purple raspberries in my yard some years ago. But I thought they were so horrible that I ripped them out. I do however like red raspberries and really loved the yellow ones I had also. But I don't have raspberries any longer. Found them to be too much work for me.

I have a few wild golden raspberries here on the property. They are ugly, but very sweet. They must have started from some long ago homestead or a bird dropping had a seed in it. Maybe that is where my wild black raspberries came from too? My deed does not show any other house ever being here, but there may have been some settler here before proper deeds. Who knows?

Hi folks; You have me convinced to try growing berries again. Thornless!!!! My father planted some red raspberry bushes 50 years ago by the railroad and he lost all of them since they use to go by and spray for weeds. Since we moved back in after his passing years ago, we had so many porobelms and still occassiosnaly with wild berry bushes, so invasive with all those runners and birds spreading them everywhere. Must find the berries along the other side of the railroad because the bushes in our yard never had any berries. I just keep digging them out since I do not like to use weed killer.

Is there special pruning and growing requirements for growing Thornless berries? Suggestions from experienced berry people is what I am looking for. Would love to make my husband some home made jam and or jelly. My son would proabbly even give them a try. He is always looking for mixed fruit at the grocery store and can not find any. He lives in a very small town with a very small grocery store.

I am definatley going out this week-end to see if our local tractor supply company, called Farm & Fleet may have some thornless to pick up. It was down to 12 degrees at it low last night and 20's yesterday. i am zone 5a. What do you think? Plan to research the named ones that have been suggested here. Which ones taste the most like the old fashioned Black berries that grow wild in Virginia? Anyone know? Thanks again folk. Marsha

The erect thornless blackberries I have don't trail like the common trailing ones do. They do still need prunning though. And they are very well behaved, staying where they were planted.

I have been looking at my local stores but have not seen any bushes for sale yet. My luck, they had them for sale back in December or something dumb like that.

I think it might be just too early in the spring for much stock to arrive. My blackberries have not even started to grow yet.

We started a fairly large berry patch this year and ordered from Berries Unlimited with great success. Everything arrived on time, happy and healthy! They are in Arkansas. They offer several "starter" packs which makes it easier to pare down your choices...

I have been looking, but all I find are just labeled red raspberry or blackberry. No variety name.

Edited to add....

I'll check out their starter pack -- sounds like a good idea for me!
