Hi folks; You have me convinced to try growing berries again. Thornless!!!! My father planted some red raspberry bushes 50 years ago by the railroad and he lost all of them since they use to go by and spray for weeds. Since we moved back in after his passing years ago, we had so many porobelms and still occassiosnaly with wild berry bushes, so invasive with all those runners and birds spreading them everywhere. Must find the berries along the other side of the railroad because the bushes in our yard never had any berries. I just keep digging them out since I do not like to use weed killer.
Is there special pruning and growing requirements for growing Thornless berries? Suggestions from experienced berry people is what I am looking for. Would love to make my husband some home made jam and or jelly. My son would proabbly even give them a try. He is always looking for mixed fruit at the grocery store and can not find any. He lives in a very small town with a very small grocery store.
I am definatley going out this week-end to see if our local tractor supply company, called Farm & Fleet may have some thornless to pick up. It was down to 12 degrees at it low last night and 20's yesterday. i am zone 5a. What do you think? Plan to research the named ones that have been suggested here. Which ones taste the most like the old fashioned Black berries that grow wild in Virginia? Anyone know? Thanks again folk. Marsha
