Rediscovering Tomatoes

By psa

What could you compare to a ripe tomato, fresh from the garden? Tomatoes are consistently one of the most popular edible garden plants, grown all over the world, yet most people have only tried a bland handful of the thousands of varieties available. For decades tomato availability was controlled by canning, shipping, and mechanical harvesting and processing needs, but now we're finally seeing a return to the flavors, textures, and versatility that made tomatoes so compelling in the first place.

Yeah im reading up on how to grow them from seedlings indoors...Looks like it will be awhile before I can put them outdoors since i think it is supposed to stay above 55 degree's during the night for them to survive.

Wood love to see your tomatoes when you get some.
I can't wait for some in my garden, makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Well, I have four varieties started: Beefsteak ( I have been known to just slice off the end if the BER isn't too bad Big Grin ), Super Marmande, Early Girl, and of course cherry tomatoes. I love those little Sweetie cherry tomatoes! Plants are all about 6 - 7 inches tall right now. They always end up taking over the GH before I can set them out.

Love your avatar woofie! I want to start more here as well....Ill have to get a temperature gauge for the greenhouse and see what temps it gets to at night. Id like to put them out there here soon but not sure it is warm enough quite yet.

My production greenhouses get as low as 45F at night without ill effects on the tomato seedlings. I have ~100 varieties in them right now, plus a number of lines that I'm stabilizing.

I target 50F at night, and no lower than 45F, and 85F during the day, and no higher than 90F.

My seedlings survived my inattention when the outside temps got down to 18F and I'd forgotten to turn the heat up in the GH. It got down to just 32F inside and they looked a bit droopy the next morning, but all survived. Whew! Dodged a bullet there! Blinking

Wow! Ok...well then I should be good to put them in the GH soon then since out night time temps are starting to go up to around the high 30's. Thank you Paul and Woofie! Hurray!

I'd suggest protecting them at night with a dome or a framework draped with plastic, just in case. Sort of a greenhouse within a greenhouse. Of course, I fuss over things more than most. Smiling

Good Idea Woofie....just not sure what I would use. The greenhouse is already able to be zipped up at night if need be. Do you think that would be enough?

Mmmm, couldn't say for sure. My GH is a not-very-well-insulated wood frame structure that at it's best will only add about 10 deg to outdoor temps without adding heat. I guess a lot depends on how large and how well insulated yours is. I've been tinkering with adding insulation to mine for several years now, so it retains heat quite a bit better than it used to. A lot of people recommend putting jugs of water in the GH to soak up heat during the day to help keep things warmer at night. However, when I've tried leaving jugs of water in MY GH, I end up with frozen blocks of ice! Hilarious!

Paul, wow! That's the most comprehensive and well-written article on tomatoes I've ever read. I've read it 3 times now and found something "new" jumping out at me each time. You are definitely the Tomato Guy. Thank you!

Ah, thank you. I had forgotten about this article. I recall it was a challenge to figure out what I had to leave out (saving and growing from seed, how to determine ripeness, watering and cultivation recommendations, common diseases and pests, other tomato forms, more variety references and examples, etc.). Maybe I should I should do a follow up. Though, I do recall that Dave and Trish covered tomatoes at some point, and there have been others that might have covered this ground in the meantime, too.
