Please wear masks when using vermiculite. It is mined from natural areas around the country which is naturally combined with asbestos.
I get 60gal bags at feed stores. When mixing medium for seedlings or whatever. Always be sure to have good ventilation and wear masks.

Hi Karen!

I use vermiculite also. I've used small medium and the coarse.

I tossed these 2012 mg seeds in this last week. They came up the next morning!

@kqnrca. I was thinking about you yesterday! Do you still grow yvonne's salvia? I'd be interested in trading if you still do. I grew them but didn't have luck collecting.

No, sorry, I haven't grown them in years. I had a few very old seeds which I tested in vermiculite last year with not a single sprout.

kqcrna said:My favorite tool for pricking out is wooden chopsticks. I use the wider end to poke a transplanting hole in soil, and use the skinny end to uproot the seedling. I have to say, they are much easier to remove from vermiculite than from potting mix, leaving roots intact.

Poor Rick would pass out if he'd see me transplanting my wintersown stuff.

I dump out the whole blob, usually on their heads. Then I flip 'em right side up, cut into hunks with a knife, like a pan of brownies. Hilarious! Then I transplant hunks.

Are you still conscious, Rick? Rolling on the floor laughing

Bea ~ If the vermiculite is dry, yes wear a mask. It is not necessary if you dampen it first. I do that with both perlite and vermiculite as they have a fine dust that can get into your lungs. We gardeners are not always as careful as we should be...."an ounce of prevention...." Thumbs up

I have been wondering that exact same thing. I don't see any posts from him for the last 4 years. I have his last known address, from 2013, but no phone number. I looked him up on Google and several sites show him still at that address. I'm thinking of writing to him, see if I get an answer. He was so much fun and I miss him!

Woofy ~ Thank you. I have been missing him, but didn't know to ask. I have lost his address a long time ago. We used to trade seeds (and stories).

I can send you the address I have. If he's still there, we could bombard him with pleas to "Come Back!" Smiling

Woofie ~ (My phone wants to call you Woodfield.)

Yes, please.
I assumed that he passed away and his SO did not know to tell us, as she was not involved in his online garden avtivities. I would like to see him posting again. I hope he is not seriously ill.
Thank you for giving me his address.
