I've always wished that I could grow them here in zone 4B!

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Mat.6:28-29

Interesting thread! Kniphofias are a real favourite of mine. I'm in the north east of England (no hummingbirds sadly!) and now only have a tiny garden where I can only have containers. I still manage to grow Kniphofias, and have had "Toffee Nosed" for several years and it does wonderfully well. I lived in Maine for 10 years and was so disappointed that I couldn't grow them there. Many years ago when I lived in Yorkshire I had "Percy's Pride", which together with "Green Jade" was on of the best I grew.
Just wonderful plants!

Wow, I have never heard of those varieties. I'm gonna go look them up. Glad you can grow them now.

Oooh, I love the Toffee Nosed! The other two are pretty as well.

Hi everyone...I purchased mine from edelweiss perennials two years ago and three did ok. Two others did not survive a hot spell. I recently replanted the three into raised beds (two feet) and will see if the three survive. I was going to purchase the ones I lost again but edelweiss no longer shows them on their site. I have seen several plants around town in landscaping that are very large and was hoping mine would grow big too! Love all the input! Hurray!

I had red hot poker growing in my island flowerbed in Salt Lake City. It was spectacular in the early summer, and I was hoping to duplicate that spectacle in North Carolina, so I ordered 2 bare root plants. Just before I received them it was decided we'd be moving back west, possibly to Arizona high desert Arizona. So...even knowing they have long taproots I went ahead and planted them...in a small barrel container. I'm hoping they'll survive until we arrive in the southwest, and will do well there.
