Gnats caught my attention. This is the first year I have had gnats. I think I brought them in on a plant from thrift store.I suppose my potting mix might suit them but I won't change after many, many years.I get Miracle Grow potting soil on sale in late fall at Walmart at.$2 a bag if I watch.Got MG peat ,$2 for 2 cu ft.I mix it with more perlite & our own humusy soil DH gets when cutting wood at our timber. Also have a lot of aged leaf mold..I will sterilize mix in microwave for seeds & cuttings but don't bother for plants that are headed outdoors.I won't use poison because greenhouse is feet from my kitchen.Plants get submerged in container of soapy water before entering in fall. So far no dratted white flies or aphids. Just a few gnats.I caught a lot of gnats on yellow sticky traps.I wouldn't want the larva to eat my seedlings.

Another great idea, thank you sNs. I like the idea of submerging the plants in soapy water in the fall. I will give that a try on the smaller plants.

Hi Sew, GMTA! I submerge pots too. I'm usually doing it to evict ant colonies, and make sure there's no spiders in the pots, or any creepy-crawlies that need to breathe. They will come out or drown.

Dish soap has chemicals in it that can be unpleasant for some plants, and not necessary for pesticide purposes. There is horticultural pesticidal soap, which is intended for use on plants (and OK to discard on the ground if in a tub of water.) Dissolving mosquito dunks in the tub would be an alternative also.

How long do you leave them submerged? I could see where that would kill all the gnat larva in the soil.

I only do the submerging in the fall & never thought about gnats or their larva at that time. I've only recently become aware of fungus gnats. As far as to how long.I just wait until bubbles appear at the top of pots.I do it in the yard.It takes a big container to submerge my hibiscus in.It works great for aphids. It helps with white flies but to be completely successful plants probably need more than 1 dunking.I didn't dream this up.I read about it on 1 of these forums.
