Hi, just wondering what everyone was doing. I have tried before with cell packs but they were hard to keep moist. So far I have some flower seeds from the local Dollar General Store.

Red Hot Sally salvia
Pansy
Zinna
Impatients
Marigolds

Does anyone have good luck with the Wave petunias? I have ordered a Burpee catalog. I haven't recieved many catalogs at all. Only daylily ones.

Hi, Teresa.

I've bought seeds at all kinds of places over the years. Locally at the Dollar Store, Walmart, Home Depot, Walgreens...

Most of them I order online from websites. A few places I use are
Swallowtail
Stokes
Summer Hill
Harris Seeds
Parks
Pinetree
There are lots of them!

Bigger, deeper wintersown containers should work better for you. Milk jugs and plastic 2 liter bottles are ideal. I shoot for at least 3 to 4" of soil depth, though, after rain and snow, it does compress to less. And remember, the seedlings will need some head room as they grow.

I get my seeds from trades, ebay,Sandhill Preservation and Artistic Gardens who have sample seeds for 40 cents.
I use any thing that gives me at least 4 inches of dirt space and then some top space for room to grow up.

Petunias are difficult for me. This year I'll sow them in individual disposable coffee cups and put them on the windowsills. They like to be damp BUT NOT WET so I spray them occasionally and water them lightly with a turkey baster. If I do put some out it will be when the weather here gets warmer, but these will take longer to bloom.

I always wintersow my petunias with good results. Petunias are pretty cold tolerant, and even tolerate a light frost OK. I wintersowed these Tidal Waves

Great to hear, Karen, I'll definitely put out some petunia seeds. When do you put yours out for winter sow?

Since every year's weather is so different, I take clues from the weather. When temps start warming, and the forecast shows no brutal freezes, I do annuals. For me, that's usually sometime in March. Sometimes I've waited until around April first in particularly cold years.

Most annuals germinate more readily than perennials. When they get a little warmth and longer days, they know to sprout. And the milk jugs work like little greenhouses, raising the inside humidity and temp higher than ambient air temp. And if we get a late hard frost, after they've germinated, I close the jugs and throw a blanket over them (annuals) overnight. Perennials usually do OK on their own in closed jugs.

Wintersowing seems a lot less scientific than indoors under lights, but the seeds seem to figure it out. I always have some jugs that don't sprout, or have a low germination rate, but most do very well.

I bought a mini greenhouse and I think I will move it closer to the well. The heat/sun really tend to dry out containers and then I would be closer to the watersupply.

Is Parks and Burpee one in the same?

I will look up a few of those mentioned. I can get carried away lol.

I love that pic of your petunias!! I need a few pots that look like that one! How many is in there? Beautiful. Was your seed pelleted?

No, I don't think Parks and Burpee are affiliated. But according to the watchdog, Park is affiliated with several other companies.

I got an email today from Burpee. It has free shipping for this weekend. ? Does ATPs have a seed exchange in the Spring? Several of the pkts I wanted have a bunch of seeds. It would be way to many for me to try and plant alone.

Another interesting source for seeds is Butchart Gardens.

Haven't bought anything for two or three years, but they generally have reasonable prices and an interesting selection.
