Dear Dr. Houseleeks, I am really confused by the label that came with this plant. Below is a picture of the label and another of the plant. It says Jovibarba heuffelii, but is is propagating like a roller (Jov.). I this possibly a cross between Jov. (roller type) and a heuff? What is with the name?

Mislabeled plants are quite common and some people are very sloppy with names. I agree with you that this is very likely not a Jovibarba heuffelii.

Hybrids are definitely possible and I have seen listings of hybrids between heuffelii and other species of Jovibarba. However, if this is an interspecies hybrid, I think a better, more accurate label would have been appropriate.

I think your best bet is to contact the seller of this plant for further information. They may be able to help.

I just love this plant, and it seems to be very prolific. So now, on to researching.

Lynn, I am quite fond of the Jovi's which is probably no surprise here. Whenever I get an opportunity, I will add another Jovi, even if its not a heuffelii, to my collection. I have a number of Jovibarba hirta's, and that is what your picture looks like to me. However, there are hybrids between hirta and the other Jovi species as well.

I tried one almost by accident and found them very easy, very attractive plants. I think they may be the easiest of all of the hardy hen and chick families and recommend them for people just starting out with H&C's

Most of these stay bright green or even yellowish green for me, but I suspect they will color up like Astrid did given the right conditions.

Comparing the photos I would say mine is a different one. I will have to send you starts so you can do a comparison in the same conditions. I have J. hirta f/Belansky Tatra and it is different than my posting at the top of the page.

They are all each slightly different and there are hybrids among the species. Do you think yours might be a hirta of some sort, just different from the ones I posted pics of or do you think it might not be a J. hirta? I am planning on getting you some more photos of some others.

From what I can make out in your picture, the chicks/rollers, however, look very similar to the hirta roller chicks. The pictures I posted were past the roller stage.

I think the best way to compare is for me to send you some.
