Just now heard of this plant, and simultaneously realized how much I need some.
Charlie Brown's Texas Sedum (Lenophyllum texanum)

Well, I had this pot of Tephrocactus. One day I saw an unknown crassulaceae seedling sprouting. At first I thought it was an echeveria (the pot of Tephros being next to my echeveria elegans). But as it grew, it started looking like a purple senecio of some kind. As it yet grew larger, it started looking like a crassula of some kind. The leaves were very fragile, and fell of at the lightest touch, and soon those leaves became more plants. The plant in fact flowered multiple times. After endless googling, I finally found that it was a lenophyllum Texanum.

Fun! That sounds like my kind of plant - a lot of action & propagation.

I see it is not frost hardy. Wonder if it would survive winter in my zone 8 if kept on the dry side and under the patio roof?

One website claims it can survive from zones 7 - 10. Yet another claims that it won't survive below 40 degrees. This is not true. I've had it survive into the low thirties, and if I remember correctly, even down to 30 degrees.

I'm not sure we will know right now.... Kinda confused. I guess we'll see. You could leave 2-3 plants indoors, 2-3 outdoors and see if the ones outdoors survive.

The zone facility in this plant database is the one area where I think there could be improvement. If I search for plants in my zone, it doesn't include plants with a lower zone listed. For example, if I search for:
shrub
perennial
full sun to part shade
showy
pink
8b
I only get 30 plants that have 8b as the minimum hardiness. I don't get any plants with a lower zone as the minimum hardiness.

If I change 1 thing, 8b to 7a, there are 122 *different* plants, none of them are the same. The 8b results should include any plants hardy in that zone but one can only find plants at the very edge of hardiness.

I wish there were checkboxes for each zone and when one searched their zone the results included all plants hardy in that zone, not just those that top-out at that zone. Edge of hardiness plants aren't the most reliable.

'Blue Spruce' growing like crazy.


I straightened this leaning fella to consider maybe chopping and saw the roots. Wow! I'm leaving this alone to continue doing this for a while.

Blue Spruce can be a thug. You will be okay if you don't let it go to seed. It will come up everywhere. Great photo Tiffany.

Thank you very much! That plant is welcome to cover all of the bare ground under/around taller plants in my front garden. So sick of pulling out sprouts of various other garbage plants. I haven't seen any signs of blooms. What color are they?
