Finally got around to adding a shelf to my potting bench. Cedar fence boards that I already had laying around. Not fancy but should be sufficient to get some stuff off the bench.

Nice job! Are you going to plumb it for water?

And lucky you - my potting bench is my kitchen counter. Rolling on the floor laughing Good thing you had the fence boards already. Around here, you couldn't buy a fence board if you tried.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

I won't be adding any water to the bench although I am going to add a water barrel with a spigot to the inside of the greenhouse. I just need to figure out how I'm running the hose from the greenhouse gutter to the barrel. I could cut a hole in the clear plastic, but not sure I want to do that. The other option is to run it under or through the base and back up. I have the height to do it, even with the water barrel sitting on blocks.

Dave, maybe I'm misunderstanding you - but if the water barrel is inside the GH and you run a hose from the gutter down under the base and back up to the top of the barrel, I don't think the water is ever going to make it to the barrel; I believe it would just overflow the gutter instead.

The entrance for the hose to the barrel is about 6" below the gutter and water tries to seek its own level. I certainly don't think it would be as efficient as a hose through the glazing, but should still work. One of my concerns is putting a hole through the plastic glazing and messing the panel up with a crack. Still in the thinking about how I want to do it phase. I really like the water barrel in the green house since it also serves as a heat sink.

I definitely understand why you wouldn't want to make a hole through the GH wall. If you try running the hose under the base and up to the barrel I hope you'll report back and let us know whether it works ! (or let us know what you decide to do, one way or another Smiling )

This is a follow up on my greenhouse water barrel setup. I ended up with 2 barrels, one inside the greenhouse and one outside. I'll be emptying the exterior one for the winter, but keep the interior one going. It gets cold here, but not super cold and it will help moderate the temperature in the greenhouse along with provide a water supply. To fill it I ended up drilling a very small hole 3/32" and then used the drill bit like a router bit to cut out an oblong hole for the hose to go through. then used some 120 grit sandpaper to smooth it out. The hose is just irrigation hose and 1 fitting. I bent the hose using a heat gun and worked slowly to get the desired bend in it. Our recent rain filled the exterior barrel, and partly filled the interior barrel. I need to plug far end of the interior barrel gutter, due to a slight slope going the wrong way. Overall pleased with result. The greenhouse is 8X12 so 'ideally' for 1" of rain should fill both 23" diameter barrels.
