Butterflies are slowly making their way back to this part of Florida. I spotted this Black Swallowtail flitting all over the Bottlebrush tree this afternoon.

Lin, does your area get the Palamedes Swallowtail? That's what your butterfly looked like to me...had to look it up, because we don't normally get them here. I spotted another tiger butterfly today...you'd think some of these swallowtails would stick around for a while, but no...they must be in a hurry. http://people.duke.edu/~jspipp...

Linda, Good eye ... thank you so much! It is indeed the Palamedes Swallowtail which is found throughout the state of Florida, and is larger than the Black Swallowtail.

I felt kind of sorry for this poor little bedraggled butterfly, obviously it's had a tough life. Some kind of metalmark, but can't tell exactly which.

Thanks ladies ... heading out now to visit the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge for the afternoon. I'm hoping things are blooming in the butterfly garden and maybe I can get some pictures!
