Sempervivum 101

By valleylynn
November 27, 2016

Sempervivums are plants that originate on the European continent. Found at high altitudes known as alpine zones, they thrive in this harsh and rugged terrain. Sempervivums are becoming increasingly popular in the United States as gardeners fall in love with the textures and colors of these amazing little plants.

Do any of the "Semps" flowers ever attract Hummingbirds or do the flowers only attract Butterflies and/or bees?

Thanks, Lynn...

I was hoping it (Black) was a "chameleon"! Changing colors as it grows or as the weather/clime changes. The ones I have are very purplish red right now. (see pic)

And the "Red Rubin" isn't red at all, yet! I can only assume from the pics I've seen online it'll turn from mostly green to having some red tinge or tips...or maybe a red throat.

Shoe, (heading to go rest a bit; long day today, longer day tomorrow, potting and potting!)

Black is a great semp, you'll love it. It's also a tough semp, seems to handle just about anything.
Rubin (or Red Rubin) will not disappoint you. This an more in color changes.

Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Rubin')

Sweet dreams shoe. Smiling

Marilyn I've seen the hummers fly around the beds, but never have seen them feeding from the semp blooms. I don't think they have what the hummers want.
But all the bees, domestic bees, bumble bees and tiny wild bees adore them.

Wow! That red semp is gorgeous and striking! Love the color!

Thanks Lynn for telling me regarding the Hummers. I'll have plenty of nectar flowers for them!

Pretty much all the semps should grow in your zone. I'm in zone 4 and haven't found any that I can't grow yet - although there are a few I need to take in the garage over winter to keep them dry. Please join us on the Semp Forum and we'll see if we can't help convince you! They are a wonderful plant and you'll love them!

Aren't they an amazing plant Kate? Such a range in size and colors. And drought tolerant. No worries about going away on a trip. Hurray!

This is the main reason I'm getting interested. I love the large succulents and plan on using a lot in the next landscape, agaves and such...but I'm now liking the smaller succulents design-wise and thinking of getting into making tuffa pots for them. If digging and all becomes too much to do, there are tons of plants just right in pots that I'd like to do. Once we've sold and resettled......

Nice thing is that semps are easy to move. Just dig up (very shallow rooted) place in a paper bag. That's it. They can stay in the bags for weeks, as long as you make sure they aren't wet when put them in the bags. A coupld of days of drying indoors/garage, will take care of excess moisture.
