An easy and inexpensive way to get started with sempervivums is to grow them in containers. But that's not the only reason to plant them in containers.

I was going to start work on my stryo containers but WE ARE HAVING A SNOW STORM and when I try to cut into the foam it leaves tiny little bits and pieces that cling to everything. Thumbs down

Guess I will have to wait till the weather clears ... sun is scheduled to shine tomorrow and melt all the accumulation. so maybe Monday Smiling

But go ahead and inspire me!!!!!! Hurray! Hurray!

Yes, fraid so, but here it just comes for a day, and can be pretty ugly, just noticed the wind has picked up and blowing it all around.

They said blizzard conditions possible, with the winds.

But by tomorrow the sun will be back out and it will have moved out on to the plains, heading your way... sorry about that!!!

I am abit confused about the shredded forest products. What should I ask for. It isn't hardwood mulch is it?
I think my chicken grit must be oystershell cause it is white. Like the granite look better.
It is supposed to rain here but that is very good!

I must say that the white grit does turn brown within a few weeks of being laid. The first time I used it, I was in tears,
I hated it so much. But then it darkened and melded with the colors in the soil.

But the darker grit looks more attractive right off.

Anna, I'm sure the forest compost isn't the same as hardwood mulch, but we don't have forest compost around here. I'm sure Lynn will be able to help you when she gets back on line.

The oyster shell grit is usually a little flatter and the granite grit is like tiny rocks. Sometimes granite grit will appear white because of the granite dust that gets on it during transportation. Marilyn, maybe when yours got rained on a few times the dust got washed off. Sometimes mine appears a lot lighter colored at first too.

Anna, we have the evergreen type forest compost. It works great for my raised beds. I have never used hardwood compost, I don't think it will work.
Here is a link that sounds good. Not sure how close it is to you. http://austinlandscapesupplies...
Their Growers Mix sounds great.

Marilyn it will say somewhere on the bag what kind of product the grit is. Either granite, oyster or something else. But I have had an occasional bag that was quite lite colored until it was rained on. Smiling

I haven't seen the pink available around here, but I did see the picture of your bed with the pink. It's not like it's an ugly pink. In fact, I think the color will look pretty nice with semps!

But you do pink so well!

Let me know if you spot a nice bright blue option Whistling

In all seriousness, I think I pink/red tone would really offset the colors of the Semps nicely. Is this for your sarcophagus bed?

Thanks Chris, I think its crushed granite, and so much of the granite around here is rosy colored...I do think it will offset the green colors during summer!
Thanks Blue (bitbit) ! I'm using the chicken grit mixed into the soil, for "sarcophagus" and both mixed in plus top dressing for my semp bed!

Greg, the grit I get tends to have a rosy color also. Some bags more than others. I think your bed looks great with that color. Thumbs up
