Kaktus said: How did you do that? It is difficult to pollinate haworthia due to the small size. I failed to cross pollinate them, usually mine will only success with the help of ants.

I used a whisker from one of my cats! A tip I found on Reddit. I've heard you can also use a bristle from a hairbrush. I trimmed it a bit, because the end was too fine. Then I just poked it in the flowers and twiddled it around a bit, alternating between one plant's flowers and the other. It worked!

Yes, I read about the whisker thing also, just can not find the cat.
I tried with pig bristles instead, but failed. Hilarious!

@Kaktus Somewhere or other I heard that the newly opened flowers produce pollen, and the older ones are ready to be fertilized. That kind of makes sense with my results, all the seed pods are on the maughanni which opened a couple days before the truncata did.

Possibly, that behavior also happened in Aloes. But now I don't plan to grow any haworthia from seeds, they like colder temperatures / winter grower. I have some that I sown from seeds, they went dormant, one year and hardly reach 1 cm.

These are nothing rare or exotic, just nameless cultivars that I bought on Etsy at different times. (Or did the truncata come from eBay? I forget.) I only plan to keep a few seeds for myself, this was just a fun experiment. How many seeds are in each pod, anyway? If you're interested in growing some, send me a tree-mail.

Congratulations Hurray! Hurray! exciting times!

Congratulations.

I've tried a few times pollinating some of Haworthia.

Cat whiskers, tiny paint brush, removing the lower flower petals to access pollen better...
Gave up, never got any to create a seed pod.

Maybe I'll try again sometime.

Same here, but I have quite a few haworthia seeds, thanks to the ants who helped me with all the pollination

@romalu - I tried your method, modified since I don't have a cat, and maybe success?!?!? We can trade if seeds formed!!!! Tried on two flowers, previous blooms do not look like the two I tried to pollinate, keeping Crossing Fingers!

@Floridian -- Good luck! I don't know if you can tell quite yet. I couldn't anyway, it was at least a few days before I could tell for sure something was happening.

@elgecko -- You probably already know that Haws are not self-fertile, so you need a second plant to cross them with. I attempted pollination repeatedly over a few days to get the best chance of success. And I learned that you have to go from newly opened flowers to older ones -- pollen is ready as soon as the flowers open, but the female part that needs to be fertilized takes another couple of days to mature.

Aauuggghhh! No! ๐Ÿคฌ cat!
I was afraid of this too because I've had stalks bitten off in the past. I thought I had it sufficiently protected by surrounding plants but I guess not. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Group hug so sorry! I know exactly how you feel when my successfully pollinated desert roses seedpods breaks or just fall off for no reason.

Sighing! So sorry about the misbehaving ๐Ÿˆ but at least you know you can do it Smiling
I saw your post and tried pollinating right away since my H. still had a few blooms on its stalk. My potential seedpods were at 3 days post pollination so we shall see. Crossing Fingers!

Rose, now that some time has passed, I hope you will appreciate my observation that the cat giveth, and the cat taketh away. Whiskers in the former case and fruit in the latter. All hail the mighty cat. Smiling

Nice thing about this game is these are long lived plants and there will most likely be another opportunity to play.

Some random Haworthia clumps around the patio that I will be dividing soon. First up cymbiformis (8" pot), chloracantha (6" pot), arachnoidea (5" pot)

These 2 are dying haworthia that have deformed till they don't look like haworthia, I put them in community pot to see if they can survive.

I broke it into 3 separate rooted parts, will wait to separate the other heads lacking their own roots.

You never know what you're going to find out when you unpot one of these, in terms of how well the individual heads have rooted. I was pretty happy to see those two offsets with lots of roots. I suppose I should have pruned them but I kept them as is.
