I don't know if this counts as a 2021 or 2022 iris. In my zone 7b garden in North Georgia mountains where we had a warm December, my "Again and Again" tb iris sent up 8 stalks! On January 2, just before night temps plunged into the 20's, I cut the stalks and brought them inside. The first of those 8 bloomed today! It is fun to have a blooming iris in January, when the outside temps barely make it into the 40's.

Evelyn, what size pots are your Iris in? Circumference and depth? I'm thinking that I would like to put Iris in pots this spring when I redo so beds.

About potting irises... I think it may not matter so much about the pot specs.
No doubt your growing zone probably impacts that. However,

I've had several of mine in a sort of "second class housing" situation for a few years. Wide pots, tiny pots, standard pots...

Old tidy cat litter bins with holes filled in the bottom actually work really well for TBs, in my experience.

I feel a bit guilty looking at this photo actually. They've been there a bit longer than planned.

Thanks Wheezy. I get what you mean. I think I would be afraid to keep my TB's outside in pots all winter here due to the extreme cold and fluctuating temp. But I have had SDB Iris in pots outside overwinter, and they have survived just fine. I will see how they are surviving this spring cause they are in the same pots in the same place as last year.

I guess I will have to leave some outside in pots next winter so I can find out if they can handle our winters. I suppose the better the root system they have going into winter, the better it will be for them.

I have four pots with TBs planted this fall. Maybe 2-3 gallon size. I placed them next to the house with some wood chips around the pots (but not enough to surround the pots all the way to the top). When I shoveled the driveway from the snow a couple weeks ago, I piled some snow around and on top of the pots for a little more insulation (we had extremely cold temps after that snow). We've had pretty mild temps since then and the snow has melted. That will be my plan for the rest of the winter: shovel a little snow around them when it snows. I'm hoping for a mild winter.
