Succulents for Cold Climates - Those Gorgeous Sempervivums

With all the buzz about growing succulents, using them for making topiaries and mosaics, planting them in hypertufa creations, and even using them as wedding flowers, it’s a shame that those of us gardening in the northern climates of Canada and Europe don’t seem to have any choices for hardy succulent plants that will perform those same functions.

I have never had sems before so I´m not quite sure I´m doing right. I planted them in regular garden soil mixed with some pumice for better drainage. Do you think I should liflt them up to mix some more pumice to the soil or maybe add some ligh stones between tnem? Green Grin!

Hi Magga. Those are some very nice looking semps. The soil looks nice and loose, so I think they will be okay.

The light green one in the middle doesn't appear to be a sempervivum, so may not be winter hardy in your part of the world. You may have to bring it in before frost.

Thank you Lynn, do you think the one in the center might be Echeveria?. I was wondering if I should take the pot with all indredients into a frostfree greenhouse, or if I should take the one in the center inside and leave the other outside for the winter?

These succulents in the photo of the thread above are my first, except for a few types that are very hardy: Saxifraga cotyledon,, Saxifraga paniculata and Saxifraga x urbium.
Also the large Rhodiola rosea and Rhodiola semenovii

The sempervivum would be very happy outdoors during your winter. I would remove the echeveria and repot for the frost free greenhouse. It should do very well in that situation. Water only occasionally. Just enough to keep it from shriveling.
Would love to see photos of your Rhodiolas.

Thank you Lynn, I´m going to give it a few weeks more outside before I take it to the greenhouse.

The Rhodiola rosea is very comon here as a native plant, I have a few in Jarphagi, where my summer cottage is. The Rhodiola semenovii is there also, I found it a couple of years ago, maybe a gift from a friend, but I don´t know who. The photos are not very good.

I have Rhodiola rosea, but this is the first time for me to see Rhodiola semenovii. It is very striking. Lovely and unusual pink blooms.
I looked at your other photos in the database. Thank you so much for putting them their, a big treat to see.

The echeveria can take cool temperatures as long as it doesn't freeze. Freezing will do them in. The important thing to remember is not to over water them in cool/cold weather.

I've come up with a unique method of renewing the over 160 different Sempervivum in my collection; you can see more about it in my post on Hometalk: http://www.hometalk.com/199183...
