Very nice tango seedling Anthony. I like the reverse too, those muted burgundy tones with ivory and yellow.

Leftwood said: Yup, this one is a keeper, at least so far. Anything might be possible, but I wonder where any of those traits came from.... hardly from any of the visible characteristics of the immediate parents. And surely, the color blocking gene(s) would have shown up in some other breeding lines somewhere - anyone familiar?

I think it's more likely that perhaps the cross was mislabeled or contaminated. It happens, and with me, too. My record keeping is via two methods - one permanent, one temporary (on the tag). Even now after all my experience, I will still have one or two discrepancies at the end of the season. Usually, with a bit if sleuthing I can figure out which is correct.

Still, it doesn't changes the beauty of the flower! Thumbs up

All this reminds me I need to get next year's foil chastity belts made up ahead of time so they will be ready to go when I need them. Also need to make at least a few foil "envelopes" for pollen collection and storage.

Rick, what I say and what I do are two different things... let's just say I hope I get it all done this winter. Right now I am finishing up digging and dividing clumps of lilies (mostly from the "big dig"). And getting them planted again before the soil gets too mucky. Tarps have been a big help.

(nor mine...I'm always way behind times!!!)

PS. We had a horrible late spring hard frost ten days ago which wiped out at least half of the blooms. Most of my lilies however had put up healthy tall stalks. I guess now I'll prune off the burnt tips and let the bulb grow larger. Many have generated secondary bulbs, so I guess in fall I'll be able to spread them out in the garden. Since these hard frosts have become a norm I'll design my borders so that they can be covered for a night or two. I was able to save my dahlias which were covered, but was unwise with my lilies.... Sad Thumbs down All of my lilies are second year readapted northern hemisphere imported bulbs. So the process takes two years before they switch south. Naturally, I did loose a few on the way, but at least I can say that I'm ready to pollen dabbing with what I'm seeing in this thread!!!!
Anthony my I tip my hat to you.

A tough break, Arturo. As climate change continues, I have had to wait longer and longer to spread my mulch in the garden. Mulch that will keep cold in, not cold out. This of course delays spring sprout if lilies and therefore late spring freezes are less of problem. I have a pile of shredded leaves, 5ft high and 15ft long, waiting to be spread. 15 years ago, I would spread at the end of November, because the ground was sufficiently cold. Now I have to wait until into January! But the goal still seems be achieved: to delay sprouting, at least compared to other's lilies sprouting in the area.

I know this isn't easy to do with pots and bags like you have, but we all must somehow adapt. unfortunately, climate change isn't going away.

So sorry to hear about that, Arturo! It looks like you have a good plan for protecting them in the future. Scorching hot summers has become my climate change nemesis lately. It damages buds, blooms and foliage as bad as frost does. There isn't much I can do about it in my situation though.

I guess we all have to adapt to Yo yo weather; thus I will envision my lilies clumped into rows/ planted borders so arches and row covers can be placed asap. Usually these devastating freezes are last minute issues. Daytime highs were close to 80ºF!
With extremes beyond the norm such as scorching from heat, perhaps shading mesh also over handy arches could help. Lilies are doing quite well here growing under the shaded edges of conifers. Two of them survived the freeze unscathed because the pots were dug inside the ground and the shoots were under the evergreen edges (in my case Cupressus torulosa) Since they are are getting radiation and UV beyond their need, positioning them differently may help. Each one of us will have to tweak in and calibrate what one can do. However, by going through my mistakes the limits are becoming more tangible. I doubt that next season I will allow the same to happen... D'Oh!
