Wow! That is one I have never heard of... had to go look it up. Black mint sounds really good. It will be fun to hear how it does for you and how well you like it.

I agree I wonder if it's a stronger tasting mint? I've never heard of it before.

Apparently actually Tagetes, related to marigold, but hardy to zone 4 and used medicinally and culinarily. Wow, sounds interesting! Keep us posted, Cinda.

We grow Mexican mint marigold here, Tagetes lucida, gets 3' tall for me. It is a terragon with anise flavor replacement more than a mint, blooms only in the late Fall.
Your Huacatay is Tagetes minuta, probably much like lucida but maybe taller.

Yes. I didn't read far enough yesterday but I later read it was Tagetes lucida or Mexican tarragon. Here it is marketed as Texas tarragon and I do grow it. It is definitely not a Marigold fragrance but rather a licorice scent when the foliage is brushed. The only resemblance to marigold is the blooms.

In this zone it is a perennial and blooms in fall for me. I have seen others here that enjoy earlier summer blooms so it may be the location I have it growing in. Mine is by the bird bath. My thought was that will ensure that I water it through summer. Unfortunately, it is a more shaded area so the blooms may be later.

I suspect you will love it and I appreciate the further education on this herb! Thank You!

SoCal, not all marigolds are considered edible, you know this, right?

I'm asking which varieties that are edible, I'm not saying all of them are edible.

Calendula <Calendula officinalis> is often called marigold or pot marigold in herbal literature and has various medical uses. It is NOT the common garden marigold, Tagetes spp. Important distinction.

Mostly it is known for soothing skin irritations. Also used in teas, but with caution

I can't overemphasize the importance of doing serious research — beyond asking about it on this site — and maybe consulting an accredited herbalist. But you know this, right?

I'll just buy the supplements then, it sounds like a lot of work. I'm not a tea drinker yet. I even avoid chamomile tea, I used to have a plant.

gasps resound

You're not a tea drinker! Well, I don't like coffee, so some more gasps resound, except at me. I hate coffee. But a good cup of tea is hard to beat, IMO.
