Hi! I recently purchased a potted stargazer lily plant. How exactly do you care for this plant? It's currently the beginning of February and the plant has big beautiful blooms already. What do I do once the blooms die and how does the care change? How do I ensure it blooms again? Also, when do you expect for the next bloom to occur. How do I care for the plant while it is dormant? How do I ensure it wakes from dormancy and blooms again? Thanks again. Any advice or detail is much appreciated!

Welcome!

Are you planning to keep your lily in a pot or plant it out of the yard?

Your lily is blooming this time of year because it was forced to. The usual bloom time is summer. In the mean time, you have to keep it green and happy so the bulb can rejuvenate to survive the winter and bloom again. When the flowers die, there should be a stem of green leaves. Keep the plant in a sunny location and water to keep the soil moist. After the stem dies (late summer, fall) pot it into a larger pot or plant it out in the yard. Forced bulbs struggle to survive, they expend too muh energy in blooming early. Hopefully you can keep yours alive.

It will stay potted. Will definitely repot into a larger pot end of summer as suggested. If worse comes to worse, I may have to buy another plant at a later date when the plant is actually supposed bloom and try again. I did not know that about it being forced to bloom and the negative outlook of that. Thanks for the info and honesty! 😊

You're welcome. If you have pets, keep the lily far far away from them. Lilies smell sweet so are an attractive but deadly snack.

I agree

Liliums can kill cats. I keep my lilies outside and far away from my indoor cats and always check that I haven't accidentally brought any pollen in on my clothes!

At the risk of contradicting Daisy, why would one pot into a larger pot in fall when the bulb has gone dormant? I'd wait until spring and look at a smaller rather than larger empty pot over winter. Shrug!
Plant it and they will come.
