12. PRUNELLA L. 1. P. vulgaris L.* Perennial, leafy-stemmed herb, often with leafy basal offshoots; stems erect or ascending, quadrangular, 1-8 dm tall, appressed to spreading pubescent. Leaves elliptic, lanceolate or lance-ovate, 3-9 cm long, 1-4 cm wide, acute to obtuse, entire, crenate or serrate , base cuneate to rounded; petioles to 5 cm long, reduced upward, upper leaves often sessile. Thyrse bracteate, spike-like, cymules 3-flowered; bracts reniform, abruptly apiculate to acuminate , ciliate. Calyx zygomorphic, 2-lipped, 0.8-1.5 cm long, upper lip 3-toothed, lower 2-parted; corolla zygomorphic, 2-lipped, 1-2.3 cm long, upper lip unlobed, galeate, lower with 2 lateral lobes toward the base, central lobe laciniate to erose. Stamens 4, curved under the upper lip, exserted; stigma 2-cleft, exserted. Mericarps dark brown, very lustrous, prominently ribbed, obovoid, 1.8-2.2 mm long, (n = 14, 16) April-frost. Natzd. in part, fields, pastures, roadsides and lawns; throughout. [SE.] P. vulgaris var. hispida Bentham, P. vulgaris var. lanceolata (Barton) Fernaldโ F, G. P. LACINIATA L . has been attributed to our area,but no specimens have been seen. It is reported to differ from the above species in having at least the upper leaves pinnatifid.

Leaves triangular-ovate to reniform, 0.6-3.5 cm long, obtuse, crenate, often shallowly 3-lobed, base widely cuneate, truncate, or slightly cordate. Bracts similar to the leaves, but sessile, ascending to horizontal. Calyx 4-6 mm long, densely pilose; corolla reddish purple, the lower lip spotted with deeper coloring, 1.5-1.8 cm long, pubescent. Mericarps 2-2.4 mm long. (n = 9) March-May; March-June, Sept.-Oct., throughout the winter in mild seasons. Pastures , fields, roadsides, lawns and waste places; natzd. throughout. [Va., Ga., Fla., Miss., Tenn., Ky., W.Va.].Similar to no. 1. Leaves crenate, not lobed, base cordate. Bracts similar to the leaves, divergent to horizontal often tinged with purple, cordate to truncate, petiolate. Calyx tube glabrous or essentially so , lobes pubescent; corolla 1-1.5 mm long. (n = 9) March-May. Waste ground and fields; natzd. at widely scattered localities in the mts. and pied., rare in cp. [Va., Ga., Ala., Tenn., Ky., W.Va.].
