DaisyDo said: Ok, what rainbowy colors, exactly? You have only mentioned light pink with touches of purple, and two colors does not constitute a rainbow.

I wouldn't call Sugar High rainbowy. Not at all. Not even any "touches of purple."

Yeah, sorry, as I said, my memory was a bit off because it was two years ago, and I just remembered the main color being pink. *Blush* I feel bad for sending you guys on a wild goose chase. Sorry!

ETA: I probably thought ARUBA1334 was the one who posted it because their photo is the DB entry photo.

This is totally the one. I even traced my thumbs-up given, and it was 2020 when it was the popular photo. And I totally remember now it being UndertheSun who posted it.

Oh yeah, and I guess it didn't really have touches of other colors on it. My bad! It was two years ago, so my memory was a bit wonky.

Thank You! to all who helped!

No worries, and glad you found it! Yes, it IS stunning indeed, and I do see touched of purple on the edges of the falls -- and a brilliant red-pink shade on the style crest. May just be the way my monitor renders colors and the lighting where the pic was taken. What ever, that IS a stunning iris!

Interestingly, that picture of it is considerably different from all the other pictures shown for it at Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Velvet Valentine') . Photshopped? Or just lighting/camara effects? It just underscores what I said before about not taking a single photograph at face value.

Tom's photo of Velvet Valentine is actually quite similar, just not as bright. The exposure could be a camera filter, but the colors and shape are still the same on Tom's.

Be assured that the color of that photo is not what the iris looks like in real life. Look at all of the pictures in the data base for it, and you will see some wide varieties of colors all the way from the intense florescent pink of the photo you posted to some that look like they have violet falls. That iris bloomed for me and then died. Soil conditions and the amount of sun light can affect colors of some irises too. It's been too long since I've seen it in person to know which picture of it is the most accurate for actual color. Maybe some one else still has it and can comment.

Definitely. That's a very pretty one (I'm quite partial to dark irises such as Nightside). I wasn't saying the iris looked like a crow's wing's black color, just the way a crow's feathers reflect off the sun. UndertheSun's Velvet Valentine seems to absorb the sun's light and then send it back out in pink hues, but I guess Daisy said that's some photoshopping effect? Anyway, glad I found it!

No, Rob does not photoshop but we do have cool mornings and it often intensifies the colors. It has happened with many of mine where it's completely different looking in colors than what I normally see.

I HAVE noticed that the angle of the sun (time of day) has a huge effect on the color in photographs. I seem to get the most accurate color in shade, and when the sun is not directly overhead. Noon is a very bad time for color accuracy IMO. And shooting toward backlit blooms tends to intensify colors at times to surreal levels. But, hey, those photos are beautiful to look at!

But they can be very striking in the right setting! (none are actually black but very dark purple that reads black in the garden)

Hmmmm…I still don't know. I like dark colors, but a dark purple like that has never been my favorite. I'd have to say Devil May Care is actually quite pretty. I like the velvety blue/purple color.

If you look at this picture you can see that the light is shining through the bloom from behind it, which is what probably intensifies the the color so much.

I love the 'black' ones!
Very hard to get a good photo of though, much like the black birds

Schreiners probably has done the most extensive hybridizing in search of black irises. But one thing I've noticed is that most black irises seem to have poor form: edges that curl up, etc. I would like them better if they had better form.

Well, I just love crows, ravens, and birds that are black in general! I think it's absolutely beautiful the way the sun shines against their feathers, showing different hues of colors I would've never thought were there.

But on an Iris…IDK Shrug! the only one so far is Devil May Care.
