Here is my mystery tulip. Picture from before the rain. It is blooming in amoung where I planted the Rembrant mixture of tulips and this one is certainly not a Rembrandt. It is short, tomato red and has mottled leaves which is typical of Kaufmanniana or Greigii tulips. I did plant Showwinner Kaufmanniana in the bottom terrace but I thought it was blood red (hasn't bloomed yet) but I didn't plant any up in that section. Or so I think. Humm, mysteries.

Oh Debra, you will be surprised (probably not) to hear that I think I will be ordering over that amount for this fall. I am already plotting my bulb orders and the want list numbers are totally out of control.

I guess I haven't regained my sanity. Problem is as I plant (and after) I swear I will not do that again. But in the spring I see my bulbs and I think about where I can add new ones.

I will need it. I already have plans for massive amount of crocus bulbs. But small bulbs like the crocus are easier to plant that the larger ones like Tulips and daffs.

I got tulips last year (800) from an order direct from Holland place. That is where I got those Sundance tulips. This year my first order will be to that place again, I was very pleased. But intend to get about 600 crocus, 150 daffs, 150 Chionodoxa and tons of tulips from them. Still mulling around how many. But more than last year. I have the crocus, daffs and such picked out. I have the tulips I think I want picked out but will wait to see some of the bloom colors from the ones I put in last year before making a final decision.

And we will be praying for a calm Fall to get them in-ground. SuperSoakerSandy surely is a once in a many decades kind of thing, right?

Man, I hope Long Island and the NY area never gets a storm like Sandy again. I hope no one does. Do you know there are still areas with no power and people without their homes rebuilt. And it has been a very, very long time. I was very lucky here myself as the worse thing was simply an inconvenience of no power. Not serious in the long run.

New for me this year. My Showwinner Kaufmanniana tulips have started to bloom. I really love that jazzy color.

They are planted in this first lower terrace of the left side of the front yard.

And now an explanation of how I do things and cram my garden full of color. This time focus on the spring bulbs.

There are two rows of daylilies running along the front of this garden along near the stacked stone wall. Lots of summer color. I wanted a big early spring show. So started planting bulbs.

You can see the daylily folliage in this more closeup view. Later the folliage grows more so you can't see the spaces between the clumps so much. Anyway, along the second row of daylilies the Showwinner bulbs are planted between the daylily clumps. In the first row the humilis violacea bulbs are planted between the daylily clumps. Between those two rows of daylilies groupings of Firespray tulips are planted. Bloom later.

Then immeditely in back of both rows of daylilies I dug a trench and planted 200 mix color early tulips. Just a few are showing early signs of buds. That runs the entire length of this garden.

In back of those early mix in running along the mid garden and directly in front of the Belgium Block mini terraces are 100 parrot mix tulips.

Then we get into the mini terraces. They have daffs in the middle and daylilies at each end. Rembrant tulips planted between the daylilies at the right end, Bunch flowering tulips betwen the daylilies at the left end.

Some crocus were stuck in the middle of the bed for more color,

Thumb of 2013-04-13/Newyorkrita/b38c5a

This fall I need to put more tulips between the Firspray clumps as I still have spaces. Then I will have to preplant the parrot tulips. And I plant on adding just a few tulips between those daffs so a touch more color.
