Here, we had aphids & earwigs. I'm not sure if everyone had earwigs, but I *know* that everyone had aphid problems last year.. in fact, the aphid population was so incredible that there was actually a news cast about the number ladybugs there was in the area! Watch the newscast in the associated link I'm providing... it's AMAZING seeing how many ladybugs this one place up in the mountains had!!

What an amazing story, Toni. Hard to think of ladybugs as pests, but I wouldn't want them flying around my house and into my mouth any more than any other bug.

A friend has swarms of ladybugs in her root cellar. They cover the walls. The root cellar isn't attached to her house, but some fly in. She doesn't mind.

I have observed that a particular weed that grows in the bottom of the seasonal stream on this property hosts a large number of ladybugs. And I notice that I have had almost no problem with aphids on my roses. So I'm thinking that I need to cultivate this weed... or at least allow it to thrive a number of places.

Had a similar thing with arugula. Two weeks ago black beetles of some sort had overrun my arugula patch, gnawing holes in almost every leaf. Instead of nuking them, I waited. And now I have a couple of very fat and happy lizards, and no new holes in the arugula. Sometimes nature works.

Still waiting for the gopher traps, though.
When you dance with nature, try not to step on her toes.

If you want nature to do the work, Steve, you could send a badger into the gopher tunnel.

This year, the only bugs I have are the dogs. Waffles keeps digging up everything. :(

For some reason my plentiful gophers don't directly bother the roses. The dogs truing to dig up the gophers are a different story!
