Arturo, thank you for a lovely post. I'm sure we all agree with your sentiments about the conflict. And I love your quote - and believe it is an attitude most of us adopt in our love of and dedication to irises - something so fun but at some level also serious.

Daisy, I too love Staniszczanin; it grows really well here in England. It has what I consider a characteristic Piatek 'smoky' tone. It would be great if his irises were available in the US - provided, of course, that it didn't make it more difficult for us to get them! Smiling Smiling

I agree Drooling Drooling ditto it were available this far south...
As for pronouncing Polish, for those that may find pleasure of contorting his/her mouth for Staniszczanin ( =Stanishchanin), Big Grin I found:

What interests me about Piatek's hybrids is he uses a lot of USA or Australian bred cultivars. So he manages to get either those rhizomes or their pollen into Poland. I'd love to know more about him and his work. Some of his iris are so beautiful I could weep with frustration that I can't buy them. Crying

Andrea, out of curiosity I just finished querying the database for Piatek's hybrids, and had noticed exactly that, about him using U.S. and Australia cultivars. Interesting. Cayeux has a lot of our cultivars. Maybe he gets them from them.

I have considered many times of starting my named iris collection by importing from Cayeux, since they also rely on USA prize winning irises as much as their own. What fascinates me about iris growing that is has become a quick global community. Growers from almost anywhere are equally dazzled by the profussion of colour, form , size, and all other traits. Irises are imho the best ambassadors of good will and world peace. They, themselves, don't understand about nations, races, religions, gender, not even their own names...they just do their thing for the sake of our happiness. Hurray! Hurray! for that.

From what Robert Piatek told me, he receives parcels from Mid America. And of course Mid America are now the main source for the wonderful Blyths as well as their own fabulous varieties. Robert is also an 'amateur' hybridiser (ie he doesn't have a nursery) so he has an email list of people like me (!) who are keen to obtain his irises. He circulates us once a year or so when he has surplus rhizomes.... Kat Zalewska (who has now moved back to Poland from the UK) is similar.
I was delighted to be able to buy from both Robert and Kat this year - more complicated since Brexit, but by no means impossible, and I didn't need an import permit. So perhaps if you're keen you could try to find out what would be needed to order from Poland to the USA?

I can't wait for you to post some pictures next year when they all bloom. Staniszczanin is one fine looking iris for sure. I wonder what the name translates to?

Mika, I'm delighted with your perseverance! I tip my hat to you. . That attitude makes this world a better place to live in (every day for the plain people anywhere). Just a couple of years back I 'discovered' Kat Zalewska in the Internet. Its good to hear that she's back in Poland. I wish both of them sucess!
Thank You! for your contribution in facilitating-bringing people together...

Mid-America will send orders overseas. Will it also bring others plants to the USA? However I won't be buying new plant s as I am moving to daughter's home in mid-Sept & will not have room for all my old plants or new ones.
