Thread OP

Someone knocked my asparagus fern over and somehow managed to separate the canopy from the root system. I've been looking at information online and found that some plants will regrow after something like this happens (called "suckering"?), and others just die.

I took the canopy and stuck it back in so that the dirt covers about 30% of it, holding it upright. I packed it down fairly tight and watered it. What can I do to give it the best chance of recovery? My girlfriend gave it to me before she died, and I would really like to keep it alive if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!

Damn, sorry to hear that!

I've cared for them but never had one, reading up now.

So...the entire upper green growing portion separated from the soil?

Where did it tear?

Above the soil and some stems still have attached growth?

At soil level but no roots?

Below soil and at least some top growth had roots still?

Was the entire root ball still in the pot?

Pictures of then or now would help.

Top of my head is high humidity. Tray of pebbles with water, or a clear plastic bag with a few vent holes around the plant tied to the pot for a couple days (what I would do at least).

Welcome! to the site
My condolences on the loss of your girlfriend.

Can you add a picture of anything you have at this point?

I expect the root ball to send up new shoots. That is what edible asparagus does every year.

I doubt the stems in soil will root, but doesn't hurt to try.
Plant it and they will come.
