Someone knocked my asparagus fern over and somehow managed to separate the canopy from the root system. I've been looking at information online and found that some plants will regrow after something like this happens (called "suckering"?), and others just die.

I took the canopy and stuck it back in so that the dirt covers about 30% of it, holding it upright. I packed it down fairly tight and watered it. What can I do to give it the best chance of recovery? My girlfriend gave it to me before she died, and I would really like to keep it alive if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!
