Rubing alcohol is advised to clean secateurs after cutting back houseplants and the secateurs also says it should be oiled to prevent rust even though itsays the blades are rust resistant
What alcohol is best can someone give a brand link. is it isopropyl alcohol?
Will the alcohol or the oil harm the plant when used again. Should the secateurs be washed off after the oil or alcohol?

https://blog-yard-garden-news.... says rubbing alcohol not effective?

I just use rubbing alcohol as a "just in case" method of cleaning my pruning tools between uses. But often I don't do anything unless I suspect some issue with a plant. If I ever had a real disease or issue with any plant though, I'd most likely use a bleach solution or something stronger.

During the summer when I'm using them often, I try to never put tools back in the garage with mud or dirt still caked on them. And never store them still wet, I'll let them sit in the sun to dry off if need be.

In fall I always clean up my tools from any leftover mud or dirt that I missed before, sharpen everything, and then coat all metal and moving parts with WD-40, and store them in the basement rather than the extreme temps of being in the garage through winter. Rust "resistant" doesn't mean rust proof.

I've been using a pair of little pink scissors for about 25 yrs and I've never cleaned them.

I agree

after every use .. wipe w/ alcohol 90%, remove sap, sharpen, oil, wipe off excess - store

any brand isopropyl alcohol (not rubbing alcohol - w/additives) ....90% dries faster ....

alcohol kills off most every contagion that could affect plants and stop the spread if any exists

wipe off any dirt

many plants have some type of sap ....this sap will dry on the metal blades, causing rust if left on the metal ....if allowed to build up the effectiveness of cutting greatly reduced

I use scotch brite pads to remove the caked on stuff

a diamond hone to sharpen blades

for oiling - use SuperLube / or clear grease to protect blades from rust ....rub in - rub off ..oil all joints and your pruner should last a lifetime

Bleach is caustic on metals and degrades gaskets. If Chlorox wipes uses bleach, I wouldn't do it.

The "study" isn't cited, and the synopsis given is really poor and without key vetting information. There is no way to know if it's claim is valid. For instance, the "test" cuts results (whatever they would be) would most certainly be inconclusive if it was done out in the open on a cloudy, moist or humid day, or anywhere near an infected material (say 300ft).

I would have expected more from a Master Gardener newsletter. There are two kinds of master gardeners:

1) The good ones who learn, and learn that there is a lot more to learn.

2) The bad ones who learn, and then think they know everything.
