Hello everyone! My stapelia gigantea & other no id stapelia plant that I had died all of a sudden. They were kept inside. They started to wilt and even after getting water they never firmed up. I put them outside on our warm days under my deck with a little morning sun but that didn't help. I looked for bugs and such but didn't see anything. It has to be something I did or didn't do because I lost them both not just one. I've had them for 12+ years.

Anyhow, does anyone have cuttings they'd be willing to share? I can take a look and see if any of my sempervivum have enough chicks to share. Please let me know. Thank you!

Audrie, sorry to hear of your loss and must be hard to not know what happened. The fact that you had them for 12 years would tell us you know how to take care of them....I wonder, if you have had visitors (not the bug kind) lately in the house?

I have a stapelia gigantea. I just got her from ebay. Not big enough to do much cutting. I hope you find some soon. If you can not find them I will send you a arm of the ones I have for postage. Hopefully that will help. PM me if you want them.

Bev, visitors, not of the bug kind? I'm lost. Not sure what it was as I even repotted them into fresh cacti mix. I told my hubby he put something in them. He hates all my plants! LOL!

Thank you Rhapsody for your kindness! ! Let your plant grow!! I was always happy to see mine bloom even if the flowers were stinky.

Audrie, I was just alluding to houseguests that may have poured their lemonade or other into your plant...you know, like officemates and their coffee?

Question ~ did you look closely at the roots? Sometimes the roots of Stapelias are attacked by root mealies. White fuzzy stuff that attaches itself to the roots and sucks the life out of these succulents.

The only other thing I'd say is don't overwater these, especially in wintertime. They are truly a succulent.
Even in our hot summers, I don't water these much.

Bev, ah ha!! That would be my hubby!! LOL!! I asked him what he did to them? I then said that's ok, kill them off one by one and I'll replace them as quickly as they go.

Kristi, I looked at the roots to see if they had root rot. I didn't see anything but wasn't looking specifically for bugs. They are long gone now in the trash so can't check. Thank you for the info! I do have a couple of plants not in the same area that have some white fuzzy bugs on/under leaves and in any tight crevices they can find. They are brown when you kill/smash them. What are they? I've been using Bayer Shrub & Tree to treat. Is that what I should use or something else? Thank you in advance for any and all help!

Audrie, the white fuzzy bugs are the mealy bugs and I use rubbing alcohol and q-tips to smash them brown. Probably safer to use than the Big Serious stuff...

I get hit with these guys also. Right about now just before going out side for the season. I use a mixture of 'Neam' oil and 'Murphy's Oil Soap'. Use a one qt. spray bottle. One teaspoon of Neam oil, one teaspoon of oil soap into a mixture of 60% water and 40% alcohol. You must use up the mixture in one day. Don't know why but that is what I was told. Start fresh each time. Just spray the leaves top and bottom. Wait a week and repeat. Best out doors in summer. When I used the Bayer mix. I lost several plants. Unknown if due to over watering or the chemicals in the stuff.
The Neam oil I purchased at my local Lowe's hardware store. It was about $10 pint. One pint should last several years.

On root mealies, I've found the only successful treatment is Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub (BATS). I make sure the soil is moist and then water with a weak solution of BATS. Recommended dose is one tablespoon per gallon of water.

Marathon is another trade name for Imidacloprid, it’s also in Bayer Advanced Plant Care, Tree & Shrub.

I usually only treat once, when moving them into winter shelter in the fall. Through transpiration, it will also kill surface mealies or other critters.

If they are only on the surface of the plants, it is quick and easy to use a Qtip in alcohol and torture the fuzzy little critters until they cry "uncle".

I did use Marathon once and it works. Just the smell was bad for awhile. I use this outside.

Marathon is good stuff. I use it lightly so I don't kill my worms in the pot. But it works the first time!

I've only used BATS. For those of you that have used Marathon, can you give us the amount you used?

I've used short a teaspoon for 5 gal of water but after I've moved 3 times, can't find my Marathon anywhere. Anybody know where I can buy some?
