I repotted my adenium earlier this year and it seems to have survived in spite of my lack of knowledge. I live in zone 5 and will be taking the plant inside for the winter. I think it is too leggy and am wondering what time to prune it. This fall or next spring? I have watched some videos on pruning so have some idea of how to do it. I would welcome ideas of how to make this plant look better and date for pruing. Thanks.

for healthier growth ....wait until spring ..when plant(s) return outside ...try to get all maintenance including pruning, lifting and repotting early spring ...that way, the plant have all summer to recover ...

cut "leggy" stems by about half ... from each new cut, 1 to 5 new stems will emerge ... pinch-out any new leaves that shade-out other new stems (shaded stems will die-off)...more stems will yield more stem tips - more stem tips will in-turn give you more flowers

Thanks James. I wish I could remember who gave me this adenium. I was a member of Dave's Garden at the time and someone traded me the plant for a daylily. She had started it from seed. I think it must have been 15-20 years ago.

I agree it is a very beautiful and well taken care of. The ones I pruned winter time developed less branches than ones I pruned in spring.

Also, I had "more success" rooting the thicker branches in springtime. In fact, I am so thrilled that I had a few cuttings propagated in spring that rooted well and might bloom soon. Some of my friends just want the flowers so they will be happy with cuttings even if they will not develop the huge caudex similar to "seedgrown".
