Chelle, I felt sad about the loss of your trees. They were breathtakingly tall! A lot of work, you will have to keep us posted.

The school property behind our house (a small woodland) had tall (not like yours though) Ash trees when we moved in, then about 10 years ago they began to fall. So sad. Now we have Maples growing there. Even though it isn't my property I have begun to make a small part of it my own woodland garden ... I have cleared the wood from my small area, but now after finding out about Hugelkultur beds (thanks to you!) I will be moving some of it back.

I'd love to try to do a small buried Hugelkultur bed for my veg. garden .... but it would be iffy since the veg garden is right next to my house. Lots of things buried there to go very deep at all..

I haven't actually dug-in any Hugelkultur type beds; so far I've just been laying down wood and burying it. I'm doing mine kind of like how nature does it in a forest since I don't have any earth moving equipment other than my back and a shovel. So far, so good.

The tree removal process is going to take awhile. It's expensive! Plus, we really only have space enough to take down parts of a few, or one whole tree at a time.

In the meantime, I'm thinking about what to do with all that full sun. When it's over, I think I might be shopping for a bunch of climbing roses. I think a nice magnolia or two is in our future as well.

How's your woodland garden coming along?

Our DIY Garden Room that's taking the place of our lost trees is coming right along. It's my favorite shady spot right now.

West end has about seven feet in height. It's working well to keep most of the hot late-day sun out.

Stump? What stump? I just added this log bed of mums, flowering brassicas and dahlias over and around it on Sunday. There are two more huge stumps buried under the flooring.





East end has 14 feet in height -perfect to let in the morning sun. We left the upper center section open and screened it. It shoots a few rays of early morning sunlight into the interior of the house. I didn't even foresee that benefit!

A wicker-type ceiling fan will be suspended from that high beam above the table.



Screening is UV pet screen, and it's wonderful! It really does block a lot of heat from the sun.

Floor covering and electrical still to do, but at least the rain gutters and most of the painting is done!

I think a small fountain in the southwest corner would be good too. So many plans...!

But plans are good. You don't have to get to all your ideas at once anyway!
