I have heard the term cougrette most often used in reference to zucchini. They're skinny and green - like a cucumber - green-striped, or yellow. They grow on a large plant with wide star-shaped leaves on long stems that grow in a clump. The fruit grows upward on short stems close to the central trunk. It's best eaten at 7-9" long, slim and strongly colored.

The vegetable marrow is white or very pale green with faint mottling; it's longer, heavier and bulkier than a zucchini, more elliptical. It also grows on a big bushy plant, with large star-shaped leaves, that grow in a clump, but may also sent out longer shoots, with fewer fruit spread out more. They're best eaten at 10-12" and creamy white.

They're closely related and in the New World are often counted as the same kind of squash. In Europe, they're quite distinct and cooked differently.
