Look at this healthy little guy. I dig some petunias out of the garden in the fall to winter over indoors. This volunteer seedling came up in the pots that held those. I can't kill a seedling in the winter, so I saved it. It looks like it's going to be a Prism Sunshine yellow, which I grew last year in two places in my garden.

Hope it grows fast so I can hack it up into cuttings soon. I'd like to get a half dozen plants before it's time to put them out.

What's the red one in sixth picture (carmine velour Wave?) and veined pink in the picture right after it?

Great job on these petunias. They are looking good! They are so expensive now. Here they are selling most of them plant by plant instead of flats.

Evelyn, now I know why I could never get my pelleted seeds to germinate. It seems the opposite should be true plus they are expensive. Fortunately, I didn't buy many.

I'm curious what the prices are for the petunias? Nurseries around here aren't really open yet.

I am planting only wide spreading petunias, meaning only one plant for midsize pot.
They are very expensive:

Oh my! Maybe 60 cents for a seed isn't so bad after all.

We always pay extra for the finished plant, compared to even all the expense and time we put in for growing from seed.
In the finished product, we are paying not only for seeds, supplies and infrastructure, but many growers, sellers and retail salaries.

It is better to pay ourselves. Of course the initial outlay, according to individual circumstances may vary. Some may invest in a greenhouse. That is most practical in harsh climates, but most expensive. Hoop houses, if one has a lot of space. Shelving units with light fixtures, heat mats, seed-starting mix, potting soil, pots and trays, and tools all add up. Sometimes they are gradually accumulated over the years so the initial outlay is not overwhelming, such as saving pots and cell packs from purchased plants over the years.

If you have no use for 100 plants of one kind, and the seeds are short-lived, sometimes it is more economical to buy a plant or two, unless you have some seed-trading partners in place to share and get other seeds you are wanting.

Rubi, what is the light situation for that adorable little plant with the bud?

It never occurred to me to try to overwinter a Petunia, ...but how could it if they are never alive past mid-summer? Maybe I should seed-toss into some of my pots. I sure have enough each winter, at least 100.

If I saw one of the big, beefy ones with scented blooms, I would probably buy it, but I never do.

That plant came up from seed in a tub of dormant plants I had set in a west window. It grew in that tub awhile in a cold room (50F) in the house. After awhile, it got potted up and went into a little 9x14" tray with my cuttings. That sits in an east window with a single cfl bulb on it for about 18 hours a day. When the petunia started some real growth, I was carrying it from east to south to west windows on the sunny days. A few weeks ago, I started up my big LED grow light that sits in a west window. That's where that plant is currently thriving.

@Elena999

Are your petunias outside yet?

The snow is still very deep here, and my petunia nursery is getting full!

Those pink ones are all started from cuttings I took off of a plant I brought inside last fall. The yellow one is a volunteer that came up around the end of December.

These are the only big seedlings I have. They were started the last week of January. They are from last year's leftover seeds.

It will be a while before the petunias that I have started will be blooming. Some didn't germinate as well.
