Sleeting and snowing here! Thumbs down
I just took some quick pictures of the tall Mom. Years ago I topped off the mother plant at eye-height every so often.

Ursula, are there several adenium in that one pot. They sure don't look like obesum to my eyes. They look like my adenium that I rooted from cuttings, where there's never a "true" caudex.

I thought those seeds sent to me almost 8 years ago were of an obesum, a plant that you said never got very tall and one that had the classic obesum caudex. Perhaps my memory fails me. It sure wouldn't be the first time. Sighing!

Ken, at the time I had three different kinds of Adeniums sitting on the deck next to each other - a tall one, which I thought had perhaps a shot of somalense. It was really tall and I always trimmed it to eye height. Also, I had a normal Adenium obesum nearby and number 3 was my Adenium multiflorum 'Mombassa' - that one was/is a short stocky plant. Seeds from this mix resulted in tall plants like your Green Giant and normal sized and some smaller plants.
Seed horns were obtained from the tall plant and the normal sized plant. But who knows what was involved.
Now a year or so later the tall Adenium developed a severe case of rot, too much chilly rain that Spring. In a final attempt to save that one, I took some healthy cuttings from the top of the plant. In desperation I dumped them in a vessel with water on the deck. To my amazement they rooted over the Summer. In water!!! So I potted them up and that is now the pot with those pieces I just posted. The mother plant never did develop a huge caudex, but those pieces certainly didn't develop them for sure since they are cuttings.
There you have it! Smiling

Ken, I don't remember anymore if the tall one was the Mom or Dad in your case, I just called it Mom….

Thanks for the update. Yes, those now rooted cuttings are just what I see when I root them. I never even thought to root adenium cuttings in water. But I haven't rooted any cuttings since the days that I had dozens of mature plants. And that was 3 years ago. Once I sold off 90% of the adenium that I had, including those rooted cuttings, I was only left with a half dozen varieties, one plant of each. Other than Green Giant, all the others appear to have the DNA of obesum, with nice, large caudices. I knew you always guessed that after seeing my (still young, Green Giant), you thought that there was some Somalense DNA in Green Giant. For some reason, I thought the seeds came from an obesum though. I do know for sure that all those 18 seedlings had the same "obesum" label. As you probably know, I'm a sticker when it comes to having my plants properly labeled. That multi-plant, multi-stemmed pot full of adenium are going to be interesting as they grow.

Beautiful Ken and Ursula! I bought one tall one recently from HD and it definitely is somalense based on the height, the blooms and the leaves. It is my tallest one, almost 3 feet tall. I named it Luisadenia from the movie Encanto.

As for water rooting, if the Adenium cuttings are mature, the would root in water. These seedlings rotted I was able to save these by water rooting.

Great save on the cuttings! You have a happy ending! I've killed so many and I could not save them.

I have 3 Adenium. Have no idea which ones they are, and did not have any clue as to the variety of those plants. I bought these three over the year because they were pretty. I always liked your posts Gigi on these but wow. so many different kinds. Kinda like orchids.

I just picked my first Persian lime from one of my two tiny, 6 month old lime trees. These two trees were purchased in July and were only about 12" tall/wide and in 1 gal. pots. I've now got them in 3 gal. pots and they are approximately 18" tall and 24" wide. I've also begun to pick tomatoes from my four tomato plants. The lime is a bit larger than the standard lemon. Though these first tomatoes are still small, they are very tasty. Grocery store bought tomatoes are tasteless and we no longer purchase them. BLT's are right around the corner.

Would you believe that Vero Beach has opened two shelters for the weekend? Our low was 60 F this morning and will be 50 tomorrow morning. That's as cold as it'll get. Next week, all the lows are predicted to range from 60 to 72! People that are walking their dogs in the neighborhood are dressed in heavy jackets, wool beanies, and gloves. LOL Most are from the NE. They quickly lost their cold-tolerance when they moved to Vero.

Thanks, Ursula.

We may get below 40 tomorrow morning, mainly because the Gulf water has cooled off so much with this run of cool, rainy weather. Today it's beautiful and sunny but still a chilly 58 outside at 11am! We'll be lucky to break 60 today even with the sun.

Ken, thanks for reminding me, I have a baby Key lime tree out in the 'back 40' under the south edge of one of my big oaks that can use a blankie tonight. It was grown from seed by my neighbor across the street who has a very productive Key lime, and was only 6in. tall a year ago when I got it. It's 18in tall and wide now and I'm hoping to at least see flowers this spring.

My tomato plants are huge, and busting out of their protective cages, but they've slowed down blooming for now. Lots of fruit still to ripen, but they need a lot more sun! I harvested all these last week, ate as many as I could manage and gave away most of them to my cleaning crew on Monday. The greenish ones got knocked off when I was trying to harvest the others. D'Oh! I'm pleasantly surprised with the yellow 'Lemon Boy' fruits - they're really pretty and also taste great despite the lack of sun.

It's "fried green tomato time", Elaine. Paired with a spicy remoulade sauce, yum!

Like y'all, our low is about what our high will be today. A pretty brisk northerly wind makes it feel a bit colder than the air temperature here.

I posted this at the adeniums forum, and Elaine, it would be easier for me to place a bag over this when it rains 😘
GigiAdeniumPlumeria said: It is going to be cold today… forecast is low 38 but only for a few hours and then back to spring like weather for a week. So I didn't want to put up the tent. But I needed my seedlings to be off the floor on my back porch so I can at least get to them if I needed to. I found a cheap temporary solution (stackable pots) courtesy of the Dollar Store:

Thumb of 2024-01-20/GigiAdeniumPlumeria/12d6cb

Thumb of 2024-01-20/GigiAdeniumPlumeria/9eb8cb

I will only use these for seedlings that are in my back porch. These are thin compared to the ones the big box stores sell. Our summer heat will warp this in no time but this stackable planters should be able to handle our morning sun.

If I like this, then I will get the sturdier ones later.
