Sherri,
The hybrid cross was made here in Florida by Ray Lemieux at Tropiflora.
Neoglaziovia variegata X Sincoraea albopictum (Formerly Orthophylum albopictum).
The pictured plant was Formally a X Orthoglaiovia 'Rosita'. With this Orthoglaiovia being reclassified as a Sincoraea, this makes this one now XSincorglaziovia 'Rosita'.

Scott, I am impressed, that name is a mouthful.

My goodness these reclassifications and crosses can make your head spin. I wouldn't have guessed a cross with Sincoraea. I did look it up on Tropiflora, very interesting foliage. Hope you show more pics as it matures, especially if you get a bloom.

I am not sure if it would be exciting or frustrating to be a taxonomist these days.

I agree as I haven't a clue on the pronunciation.

The interesting foliage was the attraction for me. The foliage looks like a Tillandsia with small spines.
Tropiflora has raised selfing seedlings from this hybrid XSincorglaziovia 'Rosita' and is said to hold the appearance of the mother and is sold as XSincorglaziovia 'Rosita' F2 at this time.

Now understanding why these broms have the nickname "hurricane lilies". My Billbergia pyramidalis 'Kyoto' have all leapt into bloom since we had such good, heavy rains last week from the hurricane. It's going to be an amazing show this week!

I know they all came out right after the hurricane, my Aunt always called them hurricane flowers, and before I knew what bromeliads were, that is what I called them.

"Hurricane lilies" also refers to Lycoris which usually bloom around hurricane time. I suspect it is too warm in southern FL for Lycoris and I also suspect it is too cold in northern FL for a regular show of Kyoto. Hence, each area has its own hurricane flowers.

Billbergia pyramidalis is pretty cold tolerant, mine are around the base of an old oak. I didn't get a photo of them this year, they are fading fast. They are also called "Flaming torch bromeliads"

I think this Aechmea looks more like a Flaming torch, now this one will hold the bloom for a long time.

Did you all see today's Popular Photo? Bromeliad (Deuterocohnia brevifolia) is an unusual (to me anyway) bromeliad.

Wow, that's a neat one. I scrolled past it before I saw the name thinking "that's not a bromeliad" . . then had to scroll back up.

Yes, it caught my eye and I had to research it, seems like it is more a dryer climate type. I don't think it would do well in the, "normal FL" climate...maybe this year it would lol. Really cool looking though.

A really interesting development here - in May I put a bunch of different broms into this tiered pot thing. The dark red Aechmea 'Perez' and some divisions of 'Casa Blanca' and 'Hallelujah' amongst them.

For the summer, two trips and way too much heat for me to do much gardening, I parked it under the mango tree - which obviously has deep shade and not enough light for any of these. Dragged it back out this afternoon. Argh!

The 'Casa Blanca has lost nearly all of it's nice white spots and 'Hallelujah' has no spots at all. 'Perez' is also lanky and very dark now. The plants obviously needed to make much more green on their leaves to survive in that deep shade.

They'll bounce back, my Casa Blanca and Hallelujah will dull in the summer when they get really shaded by the trees, but in the winter, the leaves thin out and the sun changes direction, they start coloring back up again. Just be careful putting the back in the sun and they don't get too much and burn. I had a Perez almost die in shade, they do like the sun.
