I came across this and am considering it since I have almost the exact same bird feeder. I just want to make sure I understand that the semps will be planted in the moss and I'm wondering how many semps i would need to buy for this. The author said she filled the seed tube with soil and filled the rest with the moss.
Wow, that's really cool! It makes sense to fill the tube with soil and the rest with moss. The number of semps needed would depend on how full you want it (instant gratification), or if you have lots of patience (it'll take a year or two to fill in). If you're using only semps I'd say 40-75 depending on my above "requirements".
I can't believe Home Depot here doesn't have sphagnum moss but Lowe's has it with peat. Do you think it will work or should I order it without peat online?
I can't tell you guys how many times I have gotten rid of "stuff" on a cleaning binge then a week later think up something brilliant I could have done with the "junk". Usually something garden related of course .
One note regarding this idea - the plants get heavy! Far heavier than birdseed, just thought I'd remind folks that you may have to come up with an alternative for hanging it!!

Thanks as I'm so glad you mentioned this. I'll have Home Depot cut a length of heavy chain for it.
I made a wall hanging that is taking me a while to come up with how to hang it...since as the plants have grown it weighs as much as I do (not quite!)
You're welcome Dormant!
I ended up using smaller feeder because the base of the larger one had a bad rust spot. This is hung from an awning support pipe and it wasn't an hour before a bird was pulling moss out.
