I planted almost a pound of zinnia seeds in total. Amarican Meadows has a quarter pound of Dahlia Flowered Zinnia Seeds for $9.42. I ordered 3 quarter pounds plus I bought green zinnias, cactus flowered, Scabiosa Bloom, candy stripe, and California Giant Zinnia Seeds plus I had a bag full of seeds I saved from last year.

Beautiful gardens and happy blooms!

First year growing Zinnias here. I have six different types. Mine are in containers so I can easily water them. They bloom freely in our full sweltering sun. I am hooked.

Very nice display @HoodLily

None of those are from the American Meadows seed. I sowed to big, wide, long beds beside the road with them.

Love zinnias but after 3 years of dealing with powdery mildew I said enough. No more zinnias. Your display is beautiful, Duane. I'm sure the butterflies appreciate your efforts.

Beautiful. I only have a few (one small seed envelope) in the corner of my garden ...... I got Japanese Beetles that are eating mine - trying, but I think I'm loosing the fight.... they even eat petals - I'd rather show pictures of anything else in my garden right now. What's your secret - yours are beautiful? A bouquet everywhere! ๐Ÿ’

I put in both Zinnias and Marigold in my veggie garden this year after sticking the same (old packets) last year.
SO, this year I bought four new ones and put in a large section.
Slow, but looking good so far. I tip my hat to you.

Cat Lady I just tilled the soil, raked it a little to get the tilled up grass off it, hand scattered the seed, used a leaf rake to gently rake it and after they where bout a foot tall I went out one rainy night and scattered 10-10-10 fertilizer on it thats all. The beetles are here to buy they will be gone in a couple or three weeks.

Good to know they should be gone soon. I didn't really notice them last year. I think adding flowers to my veggies maybe what attracted more this year. Oh well.

As is usual for my gardening, I planted a small free gift packette of Zinnia seeds along the edge of the garden where the berm ends.
A spot I just never got around to seeding with grass about sixteen inches or so long.

They did not show when they should but I got some volunteer radishes out of the sme patch.
I weed it ever week as it is a weed haberdashery.
WELL, the zinnias showed up, on the very edge of the spot, in two clumps of three or four plants each.
It seems to be a fourth dimension area as carrots re-planted in the berm above it are no show, but another volunteer radish has shown up up there.

With nasty nineties coming soon , I will water the area heavily today or tomorrow.
Other area where zinnias and marigolds are are doing well,.
Not sure if it is related but I have seen one lonely Cabbage Butterfly all summer and that was a month ago, maybe they do not like marigolds and zinnias.
Only bad thing about zinnias, is they do not smell like petunias. Whistling

RPR if ya want Cabbage White Butterflies around plant cabbage they host on bout all cruciferous veggies but they love cabbage. I hadn't seen any here till I planted 6 cabbage plants this year and I had a yard full. There are petunias that come back up every year in a big container I have, zinnia sometimes do to. I'm not much on the smell of petunias or marigolds I plant them though. Marigolds are a good companion plant for bush beans and stuff keeps bugs away.

What a magnificent display! Thank you for sharing.

What variety has the variegated leaves? All your pictures are beautiful, I enjoyed seeing them.

Like Brenda @breith95, I've had some problems with powdery mildew. In 2020 I planted a dozen Dreamland Pink plants. They performed beautifully as an edging about 15" tall along a walk. Everyone would ask "those are Zinnias"? They didn't get powdery mildew. The next year I grew Dreamland Pink from seeds. They grew and bloomed well at first, then were done in by PM. The next year I tried growing Magellan Pink from seeds and planted them in a different area. They too were beautiful at first and then succumbed to PM. Last year I didn't grow any.

This year I grew 3 colors of Zahara plus Double White Profusion as edgers. So far no PM but it's early yet.

I especially like the Double Zahara Raspberry Ripple. Picture of the seedling tray below. The flowers are about 2" across. The plants are about 6" tall here. The variations in color are fun.

Pat

Zinnias and Marigolds look very healthy.
Those on one end seemed not as green as they should be so I heavily fertilized all last week with foliar fertilizer.

I am almost out of any kind of fertilizer, weird , as for decades I had a LOT of bottles and boxes of various types at all times. Blinking

Saw my second white cabbage butterfly yestereday, do not want them (I used to take a butterfly net out to smuck them with -- easier said than done) but the brocolli and cauliflower are past the stage where they can do any harm.

Next year I am going to plant flowers in my South garden, been a long time since I did that, probably 20 years now but as the turn of the century is still just a short time ago to me, time is awasting. I tip my hat to you.

Thank You and those are beautiful. I don't have trouble with PM but leave spot fungus I do. The variegated is from mixed seed I've saved for 2 years ij a row the plant has two stems one regular green and one variegated I cut the plain one off. If I knew how to pinch the top out and root it I might be able to grow a whole plant that's variegated. I cut two buckets full the other day for inside use.

I think your variegated zinnia is stunning and well worth propagating and preserving going forward!! It's very healthy and looks strong. Not all variegated plants are good growers.

I'd let that bud flower and go to seed. Its possible variegation will show up in the seedlings, given the extent and regularity of variegation. It will be interesting to see the flower colors!

It's definitely the kind of chimeral variegation that could get lost during the growth processes going forward. I see 2 branches starting? The lower one looks mostly green and the upper one largely white. Let any branches grow and watch them. If any change to producing all-green leaves, pinch those off at that point.

Zinnias are easy to root, even in water. It's better to root them in potting mix. You could cut off a section 6" long or so, remove the bottom leaves, and push the bottom 1-1/2-2" into the moist potting mix. You could cover it with a plastic bag for a week or so. Keep the potting mix moist but not soaking wet. It shouldn't need rooting hormone although it wouldn't be harmful if you want to give it a kickstart. You could practice on one of your regular zinnias.

Please keep posting pictures of it!!

And I should add - those bouquets are gorgeous!!

Love all these zinnias! I planted some way back in 1999 when I started gardening after a loooongg hiatus. We battle powdery mildew too. Right now is grasshopper season and they are munching on the leaves and leaving them looking very poorly. When I decided to go organic I didn't take grasshoppers into the equation. I try to catch them to feed the birds, but most of them get away.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.
