I agree, details are hard to see,

For comparison. here are images of both termites and the winged fire ant.

I agree they do not look like termites...and the swarm time is not right, but never hurts to have a comparison... Smiling

I checked InsectID site for Georgia bugs...without luck...maybe they are transients?

Thanks for the input. I captured one in a jar tonight to compare.

It wasn't termites or the carpenter ant. It is the dreaded fire ant. Aargh! We just treated for them.
Unfortunately, unless we treat all 10 acres we never get rid of them completely.

I'm gonna put yellow sticky traps by door and window. Hopefully, I can at least keep some of them from mating. Rolling on the floor laughing

I hear ya, Tami. We treat for fire ants all the time, but our neighbors don't....so we treat for fire ants all the time. Grumbling

This link may help you with control.

could they be ants? Ants will herd or farm mealy bugs for the 'honey dew' that they will drink from the bugs. Blinking

It looks close to an oriental beetle to me, see this thread in the insect and bug ID forum for picture links:

The thread "another bug" in Insect and Bug ID forum

The pattern on them appears to vary slightly if you look at the images Google brings up also:
https://www.google.ca/search?q...

Are they actually damaging the daylilies?

I agree with Sue, Exomala orientalis. The grubs have become invasive in Maryland nursery trade

Thanks. Today is the first I've seen them but with stunted scapes again this year, slugs galore from 5 days of rain, these are the least of my worries with the daylilies.

Interesting, as I'm right next door in DE, and today is the first I've noticed but 17 is a lot. Fire ants on imported nursery stock is a concern here.

This is the first time I've ever seen anything nectaring on my lippia graveolens... maybe I'll finally get some seeds.
