Maybe some kind of beetle.

Possibly something like this one: http://bugguide.net/node/view/...

There are several that are very similar.

Chauliognathus beetles are pollinating beetles. The larvae feed on eggs and other larvae. Since people (me included) don't always think of them as pollinators, you might want to add one of your pictures to the photo gallery for Pollination Week. Thumbs up Do you have one where the beetle is sitting pretty on a flower?

More info on wiki ~

In case you didn't know, here is the info about adding pollination photos: The thread "Share your pollinator photos this week" in Site Talk forum

I recently discovered many black bugs in my vegetable bed. They are very small and black and slow movement can be detected. These bugs have decimated a whole bed of garlic chives--all the leaves yellowed within a week and the plants look dead. Not sure if they will come back next spring. If anyone can identify these pests and a treatment recommendation, would be very appreciative!

The picture is a bit too fuzzy to be sure but they look like aphids. Compare with these pictures below and especially look for the two "tailpipes" that protrude from the rear ends and which are diagnostic for aphids. You can try blasting them off with water from a hose, or try insecticidal soap to start with.

I agree with Sooby, it looks like you have aphids and blasting them with a hose is a good start. Keep checking back to see if they return and blast the again or add a little soap with a bottle of water and spray them by hand. You might see ants too, if you do, they are actually farming the aphids, soapy water will stop them too!

@ wildflowers and @ sooby---Thanks for your diagnosis, even with the fuzzy photos! I will give the hose a try and see if we can knock the critters off.

Help! These slow moving, caterpillar like critters are hatching like crazy and really going after my flowers and the birch tree seen here. I live in New England and need help identifying them to know how to get rid of them. They are black and fuzzy and hatched out of yellow, puffy sacks attached to the side of everything around my back porch.

Welcome!

Is there any way you can get a closer, clearer picture, such as scrape some off onto white paper and try to take a picture that way?

I agree a closer look will really help see what they look like. Also, can you post a general area, location or state where you are?

I still only see the one picture and even enlarging it doesn't really help. Are you looking at the most recent ID request, porkpal?

Yeah, it brings up the previous ID pests in the thread, but this current ID only started two days ago when kiki1216 joined NGA and tagged onto the thread.TBH I think stickies are confusing.

If you scroll the pictures, it will show you all the pictures posted on your page. It will be different for everyone since we can choose how many posts we see per page. I have mine set at 60 items per page, so I can scroll six photos that have been by various people.

Porkpal, I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about.

@Kiki1216, from your description, I'm guessing that you have some kind of caterpillars hatching.
