My knowledge of palms is quite limited, but aren't those Washingtonias? You know, the classic palm tree of Beverly Hills and so forth.

I am not familiar with Washingtonias but based on what I can see online looks like a "fan but with straight tips" while the Florida Thatch looks like a "fan and tips are bent".

The young palms look similar.

I found a number of references to Washingtonias on la Croisette in Cannes, including this one

http://cannes.media.tourinsoft...

which says "The Croisette's symbolic species are Washingtonia Californian palm trees and Phoenix date palms." The plants in the picture are not date palms.

A photographic example:

I don't think it's particularly easy to tell the two relevant species of Washingtonia apart without seeing their bases, but the database has an entry for the genus, so that would work.

I will let Stefan decide if he has an opinion on this.

Washingtonias are common, but that is as far as my knowledge goes. You could dig up what kind of palm it is since it is at a famous place ( in front of Lumiere cinema in Cannes)

Not a plant I have any experience with. More common in places like the SE United States, very rare in this part of the world actually, and probably most places with a Mediterranean (dry summer) climate.
