I will keep an eye on the beds to see which one will show flowers first.

It bloomed out completely. Even the offsets. My arachs have developed blooms first. Now I have several others getting ready to bloom.

My arachs are always the first to start blooming.
I have several non arach types that are starting to cone, and two heuffelii. I'm sure as the season progresses there will be more.

Hey, when I see coning at my house, it's "uh, uh..." and then I pitch. After reading some ATP posts, I decided to hold off on the pitching, grab the scissors and just lopped. Here's the results after lopping off head of the "imposter Silver King".

First pic is right after I got it at drive-by nursery and 2nd pic is after I cut off the coning head; See the new offsets?!

Also on one of the german links that either you or Cliff posted yesterday, I read that another reason for them to bloom in too much fertilizer or available nutrients. Interesting! And the site also says Arachs typically bloom first! Just thought I'd share that info here, if we're using high quality soil, it will be nutrient rich!

It looks like Beta's few offsets are going to bloom.
Good thing I have one healthy plant that is making lots of offsets.

Wahoo Bev, look at those babies. You will have to watch them closely, they could also end up blooming. What ever you do, don't pull up/toss the dying parts. I have had them appear to be completely dead and crispy, only to find offsets forming under all the dead leaves.

Greg I agree with the arach usually being the first to start of the blooming season.
I don't fertilize, and I have some blooming in my old beds that have very depleted soil, so not sure how I feel about the blooming/fertilizer thing.

Lots of mine are starting to cone and set buds. I'm surprised their progress is as close to that of your plants out west, since our spring was so late this year.

Some beautiful photo's in this thread My arachs will also be my first flowers although there are a few others that are just behind them. I used miracle grow compost with added feed. I wonder if thats why all my arachs decided to bloom and my Corsiar (I don't think my surgery worked it looks pretty dead lol) which was only a young chick itself. I've also read that a change in environment i.e. from somewhere shady to bright light could have an effect. This would also fit with the arachs because they were in a shady spot int he nursery I bought them from, and I moved them to a very bright spot. I don't know about the others though because they were mail order.

Some of mine have been moved from an old bed to a new one, but many are still in their old beds, in full sun. All of my beds are in full sun.
In fact when I go back and look at the photos, all but two have had no changes, other than our weather this spring.
