Some places don't always keep their sites up to date all the time. Especially if their supply is low and may not keep up with an internet demand.
I would call and ask.

Also, If you have a Petco near you, check the tubes near the aquarium section. They used to have the Onion Plant in those. I hadn't seen one in a long time at the one near me but that doesn't mean they don't have them at other places.

OH! Those discus are beautiful and here's hoping the eggs survive. It looks like they care for them like the angel fish, guarding them as a pair and cleaning the bad ones out. I never get any babies from the angel fish because of the plecos, they can't protect against them and they slurp them up. I so want to try some discus in my ponds, not if they won't survive though.

The eggs were gone the next day. I think it's normal, the only way I could get any to hatch would be to put the pair in a separate tank. Raising Discus is a lot of work, so I don't think it's in the cards. My husband will not be happy if I set up another tank! To raise all the babies to a good size I'd need a few tanks and daily water changes. Too much for me!

Some fish are a lot of work to raise the young , when I use to do Bettas I would have baby food jars all over the place.

Meredith, how low do you keep the PH in your Discus tank? My problem here is the water is very high PH, over 8. I could possible keep it to just under 8 but not easily and no lower. I have a new pond on the roof and I'd love to put some Discus in it if I thought they would do all right.

I don't do anything to my Ph, my Ph stayed at 8 too when I had eco-complete substrate. Now I have pool filter sand which is better for Discus. Most people recommend bare bottom but if using substrate Pool Filter Sand is best. My ph was usually around 7.5 once I started using it. Also Disacus need lots of water changes. I have learned it is best to let your water sit out for 24 hours with an air stone in it then take the ph, that is your true ph of your tap water. Most Discus keepers recommend aging your water in barrels.

Wild probably won't be able to take the high ph but captive bred discus shold be fine. You just need to dripline them to get them used to it real slow.
I've heard people recommend finding a breeder with similar conditions to yours. I have read about breeders that have he higher ph.

That is sounding positive, I will ask around here. I've seen Discus but only at aquarium shops in tanks. I want to put them in a pond, outside. The temps should be fine but it is the PH I was worried about. Of course, they aren't as beautiful in a pond because you can't see them from the side. I found that with the Angel's I have in a pond. I just don't have room, or time, for an indoor tank right now. Outside, they will get rain water, which has a slightly lower PH, half of the year but I will need to top off with well water the other half. I'm going to start questioning the aquarium guys I know here and see what others have done. I just assumed it would not be healthy for them.

Jonna, could you collect some of the rainwater to use later? A couple of nice rain barrels would be a good addition to your roof top! Smiling (although I don't actually know what quantity of water you would need, so maybe it wouldn't be practical at any rate...)

I'm sure I could figure out a way to collect it but what I worry about are mosquitoes and algae. I don't know if I could keep it fresh in the heat. I'll look into it. It's a good idea I just don't know if it is possible in the tropics.

Mosquitoes are taken care of by having a screen on top (my Rubbermaid water barrels are made that way). Algae... hmmm, maybe the algae stuff for aquariums? Mine do grow some algae, but we rotate the water out and in enough that it doesn't create a problem here.... but could be a whole 'nother story where you are!!

I am not sure but I thought it was the hardness of the water that mattered most with Discus. I think they need very soft water.
