My canna came about mid May from the supplier and I soaked it, popped it into a container under lights and over heat, and have been waiting for it to sprout ever since. Nothing has sprouted. I took it out of the container yesterday. The bulb is still well hydrated, firm, and has roots although I don't recall if the roots were there when I planted it last month. I've put it into the outside container now with some other plants, buried a little deeper. Do cannas take a long time to get going, or did I miss a vital cultural step?

How often do you water Dora? I've only been growing them for a few years but what I have responds best to a boggy situation. Once outside I placed a large pot (with a few rhizomes) in a watering trough which I kept full. Lots of water crystals in the soil and frequent fertilizing as well.

Yes, cannas are water plants.
Keep the pot in a dish of water too.

I'm a Southern Californian, and I'll vouch for that! I worked near several commercial growers, and one I saw every day had their 5 ga pots of 'tropicana' set under a run-off ditch, with water pouring over them all day.

Next weekend is supposed to be rainy, so perhaps the timing is good. I have the root in a pot with some tuberose and petunias though. Do you think that's not a good idea under the circumstances? It should still be relatively easy to dig it out and put it in another pot, although I'll have to find something else to put in there.
