Andrea.. There still pretty new at this point but definitely a couple of them check all the boxes but for plants Im guessing there maybe 10-12 of some of them others maybe less so will be quite a while before they get to that point .. the process I use is when a seedling blooms and its marked to save that 1st year its normally dug and divided, lined out and let set for 2 years so I can see numerous plants of the seedling in a 2 year clump.. if its re selected again from there.. the process repeats dig/ divide/ line out let set for another 2 years and then hopefully make a choice to keep going with it or discard on some plants that increase extremely fast might have enough in 6 years but others may take a few more our growing season is much shorter then the west coast and winters can be brutal.

My goodness, what a process! I had no idea it took so long! I tip my hat to you.

I'm currently sitting in the car on the way to Mississippi to visit my kids so hoping to make this 12 hour car ride go a little faster by sharing some pictures Big Grin or until I loose internet on the way Smiling

Poly.. I really enjoy these early in the season there a bright spot in a field of green Smiling Ill be curious to see if any of my reds catch your attention that I have been working on none of them show the Ghio ruffles yet but have been getting some different color shades and good dark ones.

Andrea..You can see why the new intro's are expensive and going up it takes a long time to come up with enough plants to intro them here the problem can be the brutal winters and short growing season in your area the problem can be re-bloom I can remember one of Joes I wanted for a long long time it looked spectacular every spring and had these beautiful buds that always stood out he had a hard time increasing it because it kept blooming year around a great thing for garden interest not so good when you wanna build up stock to be able to intro it Smiling

Lynn. You will get better germination by soaking them ...on Blushing Doll It will set pods and is fertile I used it in 2020 but haven't seen a whole lot out of it yet did 2 crosses and only kept this 1 of out them another one of Thomas's that is stunning in OR.

Derlyin... It bloomed on a short stalk probably hit from our late frosts so not many pictures of that one it was kept hopefully it shows stalks like some of the sibs they were really good.

Joann.. Im glad your back on here Smiling of the 2 you picked the A of both of them were my favorites especially 20-133A it opened right at sunset which isn't very good lighting for pictures but shows the violet it has when it 1st opens Lovey dubby lots of fun colors in that one.

Tom.. It has been good I need to do more with it have been breeding plicatas into reds trying to get some brighter colors out of them and I need tho throw it in the mix grows very well here .. I haven't done lot of crosses for luminatas/ Fancies and I need to do more they are excellent burst of color early in the season and Keith has been giving us some jewels to work with lately..

Luminatas all just wonderful, but C looks to me like something completely different - so I especially hope that one works out for you.

Thanks for letting me know about Blushing Doll - beautiful seedling you got from it!!!

You have a few what I describe as pink and lavendar/light blue blends among your various crosses. All of them are so intriguing.

One thing I can't tell from pix of iris is how big the flower is. Are all about the same size or are some unusually large? I am always staggered by a few iris I have that are as big as my hand.

Does anyone grow Reckless Abandon? It has been an amazing parent for pushing forward new colors/patterns in Plicata's if you look it up in the database here it shows RA is in the pedigree of over 99 registered plants pretty impressive for one that was introduced in 2010 and proves what a good breeder it is Smiling one of my favorites from it is Mixed Signals it has a long bloom season here, very good grower and I have been curious if I can get some plicata's out of it as there obviously in the genes coming from a mix of Reckless Abandon here are the results of some of those crosses..

This 1st one is being used as a log term project to breed the stem onto Plic's it has very good branching and high bud count the pedigree on the pollen side goes back into the Silk Road lines which are late blooming well branched plants and I would like to add them to the plic lines.

I grow Reckless Abandon. I love it, so elegant! Have it seeds that i'm planting this year Reckless Abandon x Clotho's Web. No special idea behind that. I had something in my hand and it was right there with a flower so I figured what the hell.

It is such a strange thing that it gives plicatas. I love the work on "bi-color plicatas" that has been going on. I have noticed that for some reason plicatas tend to have smaller flowers than other iris. Not sure why that is. Even though it's a very sort of traditional color combo, Rumor Has it is so large and vigorous with larger flowers - it always knocks my socks off when I see it. I wonder what it would be like crossed with Reckless Abandon?

I get asked every year by the garden clubs and visitors which one is your favorite and every year that changes but this year they were showed these groups as I thought the colors were fantastic.. here a good example of why I wish more people worked Plicata's the possibilities are endless . Keith has done some amazing work over the years breeding these and selecting the best to introduce you could just take his plicata's and cross them together every year and get an amazing show full of colors. I was very excited with this group they were all left in place so I can see them in 2 year clumps next spring.

It's not immediately obvious why RA is a plicata carrier, but I've done a bit of digging and it looks like its parent, Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Pirate Ahoy'), is also a plicata carrier.

'Pirate Ahoy' has quite complicated parentage, so it gets a bit tricky after that, but it looks like at least its grandparent, Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Starring'), is also a plicata carrier. Haven't traced it further than that.

One of the things I like about this seedling besides color/pattern, is bloom size. It appears somewhat smaller. I know many people like larger blooms, but I'm OK with smaller blooms. In fact, when I read that blooms are large, I wonder if they will be top heavy and require staking.

I've seen stated in some iris descriptions "blooms are a little smaller" ---I appreciate having that info. But I wonder if this causes a drop in sales? Thinking

Anyway, I love this seedling! Lovey dubby

Well, I prefer large blooms, talk stalks, and clean color... the color on 21-85B (and a few others) certainly appears clean.

(Yet somehow I very much like SERGEY, which with the yellow-blue falls arguably isn't clean. So go figure. Confused )

I agree, Marilyn, I don't much like the "muddiness" in some blooms. Sergey is like watercolor paints. Maybe it is the particular colors involved that make one muddy bloom more attractive than another muddy bloom. Shrug! Hilarious!
