New here and very interested in the genetics and hybridizing of Sempervivum. Any pointers on where I can find information on the varieties and crosses? Also dominant and recessive trait lists? Thank you so much!

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome!

Started looking through the posts...is there one with a list of traits/genomes? My seven year old and I cannot wait to get stated with out project/growing. We have a bunch of NOID that we have loved growing, and want to start with some named varieties. There are some really amazing ones that we have our eyes on. He loves genetics and so do I, and since this will be hands on I think he will get a lot out of it. Plus he is a self professed Geek like me. :-)

When you say traits, do you mean as in fuzzy, smooth, large, small, color, watermarkings, etc.?
Sorry to say, I do not have a very scientific mind.
Maybe there is some one here that can give us more information.

We do have Kevin Vaughn that understands that type of thing. He is a noted hybridizer of a number of different types of plants. Hosta, iris, sempervivum are but a few of them.

Maybe we can get him to answer questions in a thread devoted to that topic?

Traits that are expressed visually and traits that are carried. This way when we cross breed them we have a better understanding which are dominant/recessive and which would carry sterility, etc.

I have read up on Mr.Vaughn and would love to pick his brain about sempervivums! Found one book on amazon that might be helpful, but so cost prohibitive!

Kevin would be very helpful to you, he has a wealth of knowledge in plant breeding. Let me see what I can do in this area.

Hi Nicole, Glad you made it too ATP! Lynn, somewhere the handout from spring 2013's clinic got posted and it has a list of common traits that are dominant - like "reds and purples" (which surprisingly to me, are dominant)
Several of us have noticed that we're getting many blooming this spring/early summer, and I myself have moved my bloomers all in one section of my yard so they can randomly pollinate! I have some fuzzy ones, some webby, large, small - a huge mix and I'm just going to see what happens!! I notied today that there were lots of bees all over my semp blooms!
(Nicole, there is SOOO much info on here, and only some of it will be directly pertinent to what you're looking for, but we are a fun group, so make yourself at home!) Oh yeah and these folks LOVE to see photos, so maybe you and your son can make that part of your project, photos of your noids! (just a suggestion!)

Thank you for the link! That is what brought me to the forum in the first place. I'll post a picture of John's Big Mama plant when I can...it won't let me on my cell.

We are particularly Interested in the tetraploid crosses, at least John is (why some crosses are sterile and others are not). We also have to find a local source for named or unnamed varieties. It is already into the upper 90's in Texas, and I do by know how well shipped plants would fair.

Its tricky growing them in that heat, but many people are succeeding! Here in the north we can find them at nurseries and big box stores. Have you tried googling local sources for sempervivum? Or if you have a succulent nursery nearby, they may have ideas.

Nicole, since I have know idea about the "science" of these guys I googled "sempervivum tetraploid" and got this blog, the photos are from kevin's yard, and our clinic this past spring. And I didn't scroll through the whole thing, but I'm pretty sure he lists dominant traits.

The heat is going to be a problem I know. It is already upper 90's here. I think the next time I am at the arboretum I will ask, or my local farm coop (the master gardener program is amazig).
