Just went out to shovel for about an hour. I would say it's a good foot of snow now. Never did get any rain. This stuff is heavy! It will take us 2-3 days to shovel everything out. At 67 y/o each, we take our time. Don't need to drop dead in the driveway.

Jim, go easy. Have you thought of acquiring a snowblower? It makes removing all that heavy slushy stuff so much easier than using your knees and back. We don't want to hear of you dropping dead in your driveway, we want you to enjoy that beautiful greenhouse you constructed for many many years to come. Smiling

Rita, glad to hear you have just rain so far. I was just looking at a live stream from New York showing it is snowing quite heavily. The roads have accumulated so much snow that there is a deep slush which is the kind that makes driving very difficult. Smart move on your part to do some errands yesterday, just in case. Hope you still have some of that cheesecake left till you can next get out for more groceries. Thumbs up

I do have a snowblower, but when the snow is heavy and wet, it just peels the gravel up from the driveway, parking area, and extension to our warehouse. That means you start throwing a lot of 3/4" gravel around, and they are just big enough to get under the augers and snap the sheer pins. If all this surface was asphalt or concrete, it would be a whole different story, but I am not prepared to pay 10's of thousands for "smooth".

It is a constant struggle not to blow out any windows on our car or two work vans, or our house and warehouse windows. So, a shoveling we will go.

BTW: I will not hire a plow as it would be at least $200+ every time they came. I think that is outrageous for 20 minutes of work.

It seems like NY State, NY City, and Long Island are completely different zones when it comes to weather. (I grew up in New Rochelle, NY ("Queen City of the Sound") just outside NYC and across from Long Island.) I am not surprised Rita made out like a bandit. I envy the warmth of LI, but I do not envy the driving or the population load.

***Montague captured the image of New Rochelle at the time in his 1926 poem "Queen City of the Sound". In 1930, New Rochelle recorded a population of 54,000, up from 36,213 only ten years earlier. During the 1930s, New Rochelle was the wealthiest city per capita in New York state and the third wealthiest in the country.

Yes Jim I also have gravel in my driveway, what a mess. Had some work done on my foundation a few years back and the outfit who did that had some left over gravel so what did they do with it -- dumped it on top of the gravel that was already in the driveway. Gee thanks for that guys. D'Oh! Wish I could afford to have a heated asphalt driveway that just melts any snow away. I am no longer able to do the shoveling myself and have someone doing the plowing and snowblowing for me but the cost is not anywhere near $200+ each time. That hurts. My plan: if I ever win a lottery is to purchase a farm tractor or Bobcat with a bucket to do the work myself.

Ya, I find it very difficult knowing what the weather is like in the USA. Places that I had always thought of as being hot or warm states are always surprising me when someone who lives there talks about cold and snow. Guess I have to study up better and get things straight. Just earlier one person in Mexico posted saying how cold she was and here when I read someone's location is Mexico I presume it is hot. No problem here, northern Ontario CAN is always cold and snowy in winter (sometimes even in June/July). Rolling my eyes.

Oh yes, most definitely, if I can afford it, I would get a farm tractor or Bobcat with a bucket, most likely a Bobcat. There is a dealer about 1 mile from me that sells Bobcats. For some reason I can always feel my car wanting to pull in there, but I resist.

The real deal is, we have absolutely no debt. We have plenty of assets to pay house insurance and taxes for a long time if we live modestly. We have never not lived modestly. I would buy a Bobcat with attachments, but I am not convinced it is worth it to expend that amount of cash for the chores I would use it for. We manage with our physical labor only even at 67 y/o. We can't move like we used to, but we still move.

The rain stopped but it is still dismal out there. I took a nice hot shower and then put on my pajamas. It really is not a day for much being outside. Even the dog does nor really want to go out.

We got the next third shoveled this morning. My arms feel like silly putty. We have another third to go. I don't know if we'll get to it today or not. We are expecting 2-4" of rain starting tomorrow late morning and ending early Wednesday. They are calling for a lot of flooding with that much rain on top of a foot of snow.

One positive note is we are 1/4 of the way through January.

I feel for you, Marilyn, and here I am complaining and I'm only 67.

We went back out and shoveled a few "channels" down the driveway to the warehouse parking area, so just maybe the water from all this rain will take those routes and minimize flooding in the driveway and around the warehouse. I am finished for the day as far as shoveling is concerned.
