I have such a deer problem here that I had about given up on hostas. I hated seeing those beautiful leaves constantly reduced to a few completely defoliated stems. I dug up and passed along quite a few before I hit on the idea (originally from pirl) to make a deer fenced in area that I now call Hosta Haven. It is tucked in the wooded tree line behind the Arbor Retreat garden, and the black fencing blends right in. I've relocated my remaining hostas there and started acquiring more two years ago.
On Sunday I picked up hosta 'Silly String' and just put it on my nursery staging benches with other plants waiting to go in the ground. I went to get it to plant in Hosta Haven on Monday and the deer had found it tucked in among all the staging plants in its little 4" pot and ate all the leaves - can you believe it??? Just one night left out. They must come through every night and browse those nursery benches like a salad bar. Nothing else I have staged there is appetizing to deer, but they appear to check it out anyway, I guess they think you just never know what you'll find
